Kill or be Killed...which button would you press!?

This reminds me of Liar Game

While the scenario as presented suggests very little ambiguity in the possible outcomes (e.g. you die, they die, you both live) there also exists the possibility that the person(s) engineering this scenario are lying about the outcomes. In other words, it's possible that if either of you presses the red button, then both of you will die. Most people in this thread seem to have taken it for granted that the information given is 100% true, and responded along those lines. But if you've been kidnapped and put in this situation, why should your abductor(s) have to be completely honest with you?

And yes, that means that the possibility of both of you dying, should either of you press either of your buttons, must also exist. There is nothing to guarantee that either of you will survive, regardless of your chosen option.

Given those possibilities, I'm inclined to choose blue. At least it's been suggested that someone may not die die if that gets chosen, while red seemingly guarantees it.

Tiger and Bunny spoiler below, you've been warned:

This is the first thing that came to mind. Maybe we're both crazy

Anyway red is boring since most people would press it. Switch it up :).

Well, if someone strapped me to a chair leaving only one arm free, I'd just use my free arm to try and get out of the chair. I wouldn't think about pressing any buttons.

1943 is calling, you are late for your shift at the Death Camp. It is the same problem that the Death Camp Guards faced, to live you had to kill others.

There is a third choice that you are not considering that cannot be removed from the equation, pressing neither button. Inaction is a choice always, the question is that you have two choices of action and doesn't consider inaction a choice or action. There is also nothing said about compelling you to choose and as long as one of you doesn't choose there is no resolution. Just wait and someone eventually set you free.

The blue button is representing inaction. There doesn't need to be a button for it. Wait five minutes and we're released. The only purpose of the red button is to prevent the other guy from pressing his red button by killing him.

If i had know the person on the other side, i would have pressed the blue one. A random stranger on the other hand, no way i could know if he would press blue. Sorry but he dies.

I would pick blue... It's not like I would be missed by anyone anyway. I would like to know that I died by saving the life of another person.

It all depends on where in the world the 70% is being taken from. It would certainly be a massive blow to the population but if it was an even spread from country to country I doubt it would be anything that couldn't be recovered from unless it drives the world into mass hysteria that causes a bigger spiral of death. Chances are if I don't notice that many deaths though that it is far away enough to cushion the effects into something I would survive. Finding a job would never be easier though but the workloads would go way up until things stabilized. I am not opposed to dying in any case though. I will just simply do whatever I can to survive because I am required to.

Rationally, the blue button is the best choice. There's practically no downside to it; the only reason to press the red button is to be caught in a fit of panic fearing that the other one will press it before you do. Of course I can't be sure that the other person tied knows his game theory ... but if he does, he'll agree with me.

Btw, isn't there a "strap yourself free from the chair and bash the kidnapper's head in his body WITH YOUR SHEER MANLINESS!" option? May lead to my death as well, but hey, that'd be a good enough way to go.

That question reminds me of a story I read. I forgot the name, but it was about a married woman who was given a red button by a stranger. The man tells her that if she presses the button, she would get $1,000,000 dollars. However, a random stranger will die if she pressed the button. In the end she pressed the button, and her husband "fell" onto the subway tracks and got hit by a train.

I would probably choose the blue button. It's not that I would feel bad to press the red button and kill someone. I have no right to kill another person, whether I know them or not. If the other person kills me, that's fine by me.

Blue.

I would gladly give up my life to ensure the safety of any other person, and it is very disheartening to see so many bloodthirsty people here. If you ever feel the need to kill someone, please find me first before anyone else.

@Kavalion - Blue Button Confirms a choice has been made, I am talking about refusing the choice. Leaving the choice open may have the same effect as choosing the blue, except not pressing the button leaves the action uncompleted. Then the test stalls on waiting for a selection to be made. No one dies that way.
