Space Brothers. In a series of such length, you might expect it to run out of ways to be inspirational, but it keeps delivering thanks to its realistic and diverse cast. Everyone is relatable in some way, but nobody is more endearing than the doubtful, goofy, brilliant main character Mutta. I love how the show brings people together through a love of space, and then uses those relationships to push the characters ever closer to space itself. I feel so many wonderful emotions in Space Brothers, but I can't say the same about the more cerebral Psycho-Pass.

I'll vote for Psycho Pass just because it was a shorter run, but since all the choices I would have made were long eliminated, to keep my interest up, I made a chart to see how these shows are faring compared to the MAL overall rankings for them. I only took the top 32 of those shows (33 with Gintama added in later) of 2012 from the original list in the contest page. I stopped after 32 because only that many went into the first elimination round.

Now, I have no idea whether it is really valid to compare MAL rankings to these results, but there are some interesting things that occur when you do. Many shows rated rather high in MAL didn't even make the first cut here. None of the remaining three contenders fell in the top six (for 2012), let alone placed in the top three.

Psycho-Pass

Barely. While it had a few things to detract from it, it did most things A LOT better than Space Brothers. However, Space Brothers also had one key thing going for it that keeps it in the running with Psycho-Pass: Character depth and development. This, alone, is enough to make me seriously consider whether Psycho-Pass deserves my vote here -- Space Brothers was amazing is this area, Psycho-Pass was just pretty good, and the four things I've found most shape my opinion on a show are character depth, dialogue, music/atmosphere, and art style (in order). Psycho-Pass has an enormous edge on both music and dialogue, but Space Brothers wipes the floor with Psycho-Pass in terms of character depth. Even now, I feel like I'm still learning a lot about all the characters in Space Brothers, and it takes some great writing to be able to pull that off. On the other hand, with Psycho-Pass, I felt all of the characters were basically figured out within the first few episodes, with only a few (admittedly awesome) moments in the middle and a few (less awesome, but still pretty good) moments near the end. Space Brothers feels like I'm always learning more and more about who these people are, and that is a great part of the show.

So why am I voting Psycho-Pass? Because almost everything else is better. The art style, animation, dialogue, music, character design, plot, world, intellectual depth, etc. is all superior in Psycho-Pass. Not much else to say -- it was one of the best of the year, and I'd much rather it make it to the end than Space Brothers (all my favorites are gone anyway).

My vote goes to Space Brothers. The story reveals a lot about what it is to be human. We get to watch the chosen few represent the many seeking answers to questions out in the great Beyond. This show has a lot of heart for the common man, the selection process, the vision, trials and triumphs. Though I did like watching the philosophical questions get addressed and/or dissed in Psycho-Pass I felt that certain aspects of the criminal minds in this anime seemed forced and contrived. That story aspect could have been fleshed out a little more (hint to author and director: watch a few more Ghost in the Shell anime episodes for background probing and portraying the criminal mind and if that is insufficient watch a few shows from Barry Levinson directed "Homicide: Life on the Street").

One aspect of Space Brothers I have to admire is the realistic portrayal of the engineers, tech support overseeing the astronaut candidate teams as the tasks are attempted. They are quite the diverse group and this is the way it is in the real world business and technical cultures. For one who has never cared for the quirks of the real NASA and its handling of projecting space objects (excepting Hubble and certain satellite projects) I've become very impressed with this series in general for the story it is telling; thus, it gets my vote.

Tough choice, but Space Brothers/Uchuu Kyoudai. It's so much more realistic than Psycho-Pass, not to mention the story was great.

Welcome back chrome_mist! I hope you're doing well and everything's okay.

For this round, I vote for Psycho-Pass. I really liked the sci-fi element in it, the setting, and the characters. I have not seen Space Brothers yet, and considering what I know about it, especially the length of it, it's not high on my priority list.

Also, if it'd be alright with you chrome_mist, I want to go ahead and vote for the final round. I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow and won't be around to vote for it. If it's not alright, then just ignore the bottom part of this post. Whatever you decide.

- If Psycho Pass wins this round...
I vote for Psycho-Pass over Shin Sekai Yori. As previously stated, I didn't like how difficult it was to get into Shin Sekai Yori in its first half, plus the animation was lackluster. Psycho-Pass was more consistent to me, and I really liked the setting, the characters, and the premise.
- If Space Brothers wins this round...
I vote for Shin Sekai Yori over Space Brothers. Despite its very slow start, Shin Sekai Yori ended up impressing me with its deep plot, suspense, and amazing soundtrack. As I've mentioned before, I'm really just not that excited about watching Space Brothers from what I know about it.

This is a hard one...I really love both shows!
I'm gonna have to go with Space Brothers on this one.
This was a show I didn't expect to like too much at first, but after a year or so of watching it, I became hooked. I love how realistically they portray the characters, and I love the storytelling.

My Little Monster made it past the first cut (I distinctly remembering voting for it), and From the New World is a finalist now. It's an interesting list, but I'm not too surprised by most of the discrepancies. Sequels tend to score more highly on MAL because people who didn't like the first season probably won't watch the second, and the top four of 2012 according to MAL are all sequels. But there are definitely some oddball results here and there (I expected Fate/Zero 2nd Season to do better in this contest).

Psycho-pass because I like the actions scenes and for some reason, I just didn't like the concept of Space Brothers.

That's right regarding My Little Monster. It lost during the 2nd match of the first round. I think asharka may have missed it because it's in the list as Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun.

ETA: Except I just noticed that it is on asharka's list as Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun.
