Both shows tickle the cerebral to such degrees they stand out from the usual anime fare. Both shows hint that mankind, warts and all, is still striving for the unattainable societal benchmark where subtle re-invention of values that validate present existence as husbanded by rule arbitrators from the primal ashes of its past is justified. Both shows rely on a fear factor to plausibly substantiate chosen methods of denouement as do they illustrate the flaws delegating power and perceived responsibilities enforcing imperfect laws. And both shows had story line flaws in the course of their telling.

I liked both series and found each possessed its own charm once the story ended. I would happily buy either production as a Blu-Ray release. I already own and periodically listen to a CD with the Shin Sekai Yori songs while driving.

That said, I'm choosing Psycho-Pass over Shin Sekai Yori because of the production value. I was impressed with the CG effects incorporated in the show. This animation didn't go overboard with sensory overload at the expense of character development and the one-liner dialogue sprinkled intermittently throughout the character interactions between the older detective and younger co-workers lent a believable feel dealing with tactical situations. The dialogue projected a more mature level of intimacy involving the audience with the characters.

My vote: Psycho-Pass.

So we're finally at the end of this 2012 Battle. I must admit that when I joined in on the voting I had envisioned a different outcome (Fate/Zero vs. Space Brothers) than the one presented before me here. But that is the fun in these sort of deals - anything can happen. Thus, we are left with Psycho-Pass against From the New World in the finals.

This is probably the toughest choice I've had to make in this entire 2012 Battle. I enjoyed both series immensely and have sung their praises before in previous rounds.

Psycho-Pass was my favorite thriller of last year. I loved the futuristic world it depicted and the intellectual story-telling it presented while exploring many societal and psychological themes. The series had a beautiful soundtrack with amazing Opening and Ending combos. I liked the animation but I admit that at times it would seem a bit off. As some have mentioned before, the characters in Psycho-Pass can be considered the weakest part of the show. Overall though, I feel it doesn't take away from the series as a whole. All things considered, Psycho-Pass was a fairly solid series. Like most series, it had its ups and downs but still managed to present an interesting story within a futuristic world where the beauty of the mind is explored.

It is ultimately From the New World's story-telling that I think stands out the most. From The New World did have its rough spots. I felt the series started off slow which may have turned some people off the show. It did pick up the pace after those first couple of episodes and managed to deliver in the end, though I admit there were some shaky moments. The execution of some of the characters could have been better but I felt it didn't take away from the series overall. Essentially, it was the presentation of the unique story being told that made From the New World shine - a story that I enjoyed very much and felt was executed rather nicely all things considered.

Now here comes the hard part - which series gets my vote? As you know, I am quite fond of both series and there were many things that each did well in its own way. In order to reach a verdict, I decided to compare the series below in different aspects and see which I favored more in each.

^ Based on everything I took into consideration, my vote goes to Psycho-Pass. Determining my vote for this battle was time-consuming but I felt that I owed it to both of these series that I enjoyed very much. It was a fun 2012 Battle and I wish both of these series good luck in this final battle.

Shin Sekai Yori for it's perfect and disturbingly believable portrayal of the world it set out to portray. Everything made sense, everything was right. And all so brilliantly carried out, so as to keep one's interest between every episode, to the extent that I started measuring my week in terms of time to the next episode of this series.

I said this the first time I voted for it. For me, SSY was by far the best anime of 2012.

Incidentally, I abandoned Psycho Pass (in the short to medium term, not permanently) because it seemed to have a moderately similar feel to SSY and I didn't feel like watching two such series at the same time. SSY was obviously the better of the two.

Psycho Pass all the way!

I was hoping that it would have been a showdown between Fate/Zero and Psycho Pass though it would have been hard deciding between those two series. I learned never to eat anything while watching Psycho Pass because something gruesome always happens, which makes the show definitely stand out. Quite a few of the characters had good development, especially with Akane becoming more like a detective and Kogami seeing himself as not just a hunting dog anymore

Shinsekai Yori easily.

I don't want "2deep4u" Psycho-Pass shallow-writing ass to win.

Already stated why in the VS Space brothers battle.

Haven't even finished Shinsekai Yori and I prefer it to P-P.

Shin Sekai Yori

Pyscho-Pass has a good production value, solid premise and a good storyline up until the middle part of the show. It went downhill after the middle part when the story goes easy mode.

While SSY doesn't have the same production value as Psycho Pass but the characters well developed, the story is well executed and consistent. The only complain that I have with SSY is the painfully slow pacing due to the fact the SSY has a LOT of the much needed story material that needs to be explained.

In conclusion, Psycho Pass may have a superior production value but it failed in the story department. In contrast, SSY may have lesser production than its contender but it compensates for its excellent well executed storyline albeit the slow pacing. And in my standard, a well made story is always better than production value.
