Shin Sekai Yori - This show was thought-provoking, well thought-out, and is deserving of more recognition and praise. It's plot had me guessing the entire time and held me in anticipation. Never before have I watched an anime as unique as Shin Sekai Yori, it's truly a masterpiece. Also, the animation was well produced.

I think Humanity Has Declined was the better show, so it gets my vote.

I watched episodes 1-4 and 9-10 earlier today, and what I saw was literally perfect. Personal preferences will factor into how popular it is, but I can't think of a single thing to criticize. They handled relevant topics in an even-handed manner while instilling common sense and deconstructing social orders. In a word, Humanity Has Declined is kind of genius.

It was strange too, because usually I have criticisms for everything. Especially things I like.

Which brings me to Shin Sekai Yori (my favorite show of the year behind Psycho-Pass, subjectively speaking).

So, about that.

This turned into a pretty long rant so I'll summarize (spoiler free).

Shin Sekai Yori had a fantastic premise. It also raised exceptional questions early on, like humanity being a parasite that corrupts the Earth by its simple existence, the fundamental nature of fear and fearful social orders, the value of a human life weighed in other human lives, rejecting social norms, racism, the theory of realism ("might makes right"), etc.

The 10th episode was one of the best of any series I saw all year. But the second half slid all over the place with no real direction until they summarized all their bullet points in episode 25 and called it a day. It was a really good show and it had a decent ending, but it could've been worlds better. There was extraordinary potential there that went unrealized.

And episodes 22-24 were literally bad. There's no other way to describe them.

It's still my second favorite anime from 2012 and I'd recommend it, but Humanity Has Declined wins on execution.

As far as my personal opinions go.

I'll be happy whichever one passes though; they're both incredible shows that deserve more attention.

Shin Sekai Yori - Both are kind of similar in the impact they left on me. Both feature unique narratives with dystopian settings but I generally prefer the more brooding and serious tone of SSY over the dry humor of Jintai. So if I had the choice to revisit one of the two series down the road, it'd be SSY.

Some voters sure know how to write a lot about why they chose their picks though, color me impressed.

Humanity Has Declined

No questions about it really, I enjoyed it vastly more than Shin Sekai Yori (which I have yet to finish...). The humour in HHD was a fresh breath at the time, every episode enjoyable & baffling. I think most update-to-date anime fans will know what you mean if you say "bread suicide". The beauty of the show is how it seems so innocent and naive, yet it is really dark (comedy) & absurd - And memorable.

I'm not voting this time.
I can't pick between Jinrui (AHTL) and Shinsekai (kufirst).
It's just not possible.

Humanity Has Declined.

Both shows has a deep and complex story but everything boils down to how much you enjoy it. Humanity Has Decline got my vote because the show deliver it's complex messages to the audience in the most easiest and the most morbid manner, Black Humor.

Humanity Has Declined

As a individual who has seen both, I have to choose Jinrui. I'm a total sucker for gallows humor so ultimately this is just a personal preference vote. I enjoyed watching it more. It should also be noted that Jinrui was able to pull off a non-linear storyline. I also I feel that, while intriguing, From the New World lacked focus in places.

Both are smart shows. It makes me sad that one has to be eliminated this round. :(

Jinrui wa Suitaishimashita

I enjoyed both of them immensely. However, character-wise, Jinrui wins my vote. Saki is no match for the heroine in Jinrui imo. Also, Yousei-san > bake nezumi. :p

Crap, I'll have to sit this one out again lol. I haven't seen Ano Natsu de Matteru.

Sakurasou was wonderful, but way too melodramatic for me to give it a blind vote.

My confidence in sakurasou is very high so my vote goes to

Ano natsu de matteru

The anime had many qualities I like from back in the day. The format was similar to please teacher and please twins. Also what guy doesn't want an alien girlfriend??

Both were very good, and have a lot in common. I'm leaning towards Sakurasou, but I'm afraid that might be more of a recency bias thing. I think I'll wait to vote, and see if anyone's reasons can convince me one way or another.

Sakurasou no Petto na Kanojo!

Such a wonderful story, great characters, humor, music, romance, amazingly emotional ending. You have to vote for this!!!! Mashiro, how can you not love Mashiro? And Misaki sempai?! And Nanami! And Yuuko imouto! And the cats! And Dragon! And Nyaparron!

I started watching Ano Natsu and must finish it but it didn't draw me in like Sakurasou.
