I would say Nausicaa, the Valley of the Wind would be the first Masterpiece.

Grave of the Fireflies is a great anime flim, but if I have to feel bad for the main character and his younger sister, who feels sorry for the tens of thousands of Chinese that suffered?

So since this is a Studio Ghibli film thread i've got a general question.

Does anybody remember Tales From Earthsea?
On that note did anybody like Tales From Earthsea?

Because if Ponyo is considered to be an underwhelming Ghibli film then Earthsea is a terrible Ghibli film. Missed opportunities abound.

Spirited away is technically the best film Studio Ghibli ever made but Grave Of Fireflies was my first so it will always be my favorite.

5. Whisper of the Heart
6. My Neighbor Totoro
7. Howl's Moving Castle
8. My Neighbor the Yamadas
9. The Cat Returns
10. Nausicaa (though a bit preachy but not as much as Mononoke..)

Hated

Haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies, Arietty or From Up on Poppy Hill yet.

Princess Mononoke is my favorite. Being a biology student and a strong supporter of environmental protection, it really moved me.

Princess Mononoke are my favourite. Anyone else not feeling the "newer" movies that have been made? :/

@Arsenette

Grave of the Fireflies is nice. But only a one time watch for me. My heart can't take watching it more than once. Haven't watched "Only Yesterday". Ponyo was good visual wise, and had potential to be amazing. But the story went no where. Absolutely no where.

Yeah I was told about Grave of the Fireflies to be ready for it as if you were watching Shindler's list (in terms of gravity of the story). I'm not sure I have the stomach for it though. I LOVE Only Yesterday. It apparently came out subtitled in England a few years back and I got a er.. (puts eyepatch on) copy of it that way since I don't have a PAL VCR. Seems Disney didn't want to release it because it's too "niche" and some lame excuse of a problem in one scene where someone was discussing her menstruation cycle (but they were fine bringing out the inflatable crotches in Pom Poko.. so who the hell knows why Disney bawked at Only Yesterday). I'd STRONGLY recommend watching it. It's a sweet film. Nothing blows up so anyone expecting action wouldn't watch it. I still think this is Ghibli's masterpiece even though it was technically a Takahata film. Agreed on Ponyo. I saw it.. visually stunning but wft story. They must have been tapping acid to come up with that one.. LOL. Looking forward to From Up Poppy Hill as it feels like Only Yesterday in style.

My favorites would be:
- The Cat Returns
- Howls Moving Castle
- Porco Rosso

Tales of Earthsea get mention because I read the books and enjoyed them
mostly. Though I think a movie about the first book would have been best...

Nausicaa wasn't made by Studio Ghibli though. it was made by Top Craft. (it's still miyazaki though)

look directly under "films"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Ghibli

it annoys me when folks that mistake

That's really splitting hairs though.. it's Miyazaki so that should count.
