Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Princess Mononoke are my preferred Ghibli films.

Some are going to bash me on this, but I feel that Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo are easily Miyazaki's weakest films and at this point, I'd love to see a different person take up his mantle after his last few mediocre (for his level) efforts.

I have only watched two of their movies but both of them are my favorite movies of all time. They are Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

So since this is a Studio Ghibli film thread i've got a general question.

Does anybody remember Tales From Earthsea?
On that note did anybody like Tales From Earthsea?

Because if Ponyo is considered to be an underwhelming Ghibli film then Earthsea is a terrible Ghibli film. Missed opportunities abound.

I actually liked the creepiness of Tales from Earthsea. Arren's madness, Cob's creepy transformations... so good. The main theme of the film was about the imbalance of the world and how that equilibrium can be achieved through man's harmony with nature and himself. I thought it wasn't too far off from the man vs nature themes of Studio Ghibli's other films, compared to Ponyo. Ponyo was just... fluff.

Princess Mononoke is the best but Sprited Away is closest to my heart. SA has a charm to it.

Kiki's delivery service is something I watch when it's a nice peaceful day and I just wanna relax. The same goes for Howl's Moving Castle.

Why isn't anyone SAYING THIS?!

I realize it's not the best movie Studio Ghibli has produced, but why hasn't anyone at least mentioned it!
It's got stunning animation, music an a magical story to tell - what else can you want?!

You can't really go wrong with a Ghibli, but out of the 19 available (some say 18 since Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was produced and released before the studio's founding, but i still like to count it) I'll pick 7 from them.

Cat Returns

Grave of the Fireflies

Howl's Moving Castle

Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Porco Rosso

Princess Mononoke

Spirited Away (Don't watch the dubbed version they ruin the story, badly)

Ive only ever watched the English version of Spirited away. is it really that much better in subs?

Yes very much so, it's infact the only Ghibli where i have to watch it subbed, i rather enjoy some of the other dubs (Cat Returns being my favorite) But besides me not liking Chihiro's voice the dub gives away a plot point which, when you 1st watch it, makes you wonder if it was something significent to be brought up later or just a way of showing a world filled with gods and spirits.

Which version? Heck I've read the original story.. that's messed up as well. I don't count it as my favorite either. Regardless though.. this was a pretty vivid acid trip for Miyazaki

Howl's Moving Castle is near and dear to my heart. My boyfriend gave it to me for my 18th birthday (a few years before we were even together), and it's the movie that convinced me to watch other animes. Of course the story and animation are wonderful since it's a Miyazaki :)

Whisper of the Heart is my next favorite because I adore love stories, and I find the story in that movie so genuinely sweet. Of course my Neighbor Totoro is high up on my list as well, but that's because I have been in love with Totoro since my mother brought the VHS tape home when I was 4 years old. After those three movies it's pretty tough for me to pick any one Studio Ghibli over another because I have seen them all, and I recycle through them all of the time They are all great!
