Dating abuse and harassment via technology
Posted 4/30/13 , edited 11/6/13
Technological harassment? I've heard of cyberbullying, but dating harassment?

Admittedly, I didn't ever have these sorts of issues when I was a teen, because at the time there were no widespread mobile devices or internet access in computer labs (no internet, yet). This is stunning. With the rate at which communication technologies are progressing, I can only imagine how much more "connected" my own daughter (now almost seven) will be to her social networks in the next five to seven years.

So, kids and young adults, how often does this seem to happen around you and those you know? I'm a fairly ignorant old fart in this respect, so if you have anything to share about it, please educate.

EDIT: If you find yourself in need of help, whether for yourself or someone else, there are resources available.

For everyone, including parents and educators:

Somewhat relevant: There was a big "Sexting scandal" at a school near where I live, four or five kids were all sending nekkid pics to each other (And others outside their little group). They were like 12-13 too.

Hear about abuse/threats and the like happening over facebook, twitter, and text related to relationships all the time in high school. Don't participate in those forms of social media enough to have a primary perspective on it.

Would or could you possibly ever see yourself in the position in which you would coerce/pressure a girl you were dating into sexting or sending compromising photos of herself, if she didn't wish to do so? Would you ever see yourself emotionally blackmailing her with those at a later time in a moment of anger, heartbreak or jealousy?

1. No, I'm perfectly fine with my imagination and or the internet, if you know what I mean.
2. If I ever did do so (Or came to be in possession of the images somehow), I'd like to think I wouldn't hold them over her. I'm 17, our relationship probably isn't worth ruining her life over.

---

I probably don't think like many of the people in my age group, though. I know of people who would or have done things like this, and they tend to be the majority.

I personally hate ''the modern ways of dating'' The old ways are lost but still the best ones in my opinion. No life insurance today.

I do find that this sort of thing may have the appeal of somewhat shielding the abuser from direct accountability. I doubt many of these kids would be bold enough just to blurt these demands for debauchery out, face-to-face.

Exactly, I also meant that the kids who are reporting this type of stuff need to "man-up" so to speak, if you can't handle someone being mean to you electronically, then good luck when you meet the guy who is gonna do it to your face.

I agree with you.... like 120%
The worst of all this is when it deals with social media, in a lot of cases, relationships are ruined because teens get jealous just cuz their boyfriend or girlfriend is chatting with another on the FB or twitter chat. Even liking another photo other then the one you're in a relationship with is considered wrong or signs of "cheating".
