Over the last nine or so months, I've been cycling through some great shows - FLCL, Serial Experiments Lain, Tatami Galaxy, Revolutionary Girl Utena, etc.

Shows like those obviously brim with ideas. But, occasionally, I find some seemingly-superficial show that, upon examination, proves to be thematically rich.

For example, I think the Endless Eight arc of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya isn't just some poorly-executed gimmick, but a crazy effective device for internalizing, in the viewer, Yuki's feelings throughout the show. Rather than being some one-note schtick, it sets the viewer up for the emotional arc of the Haruhi movie.

Or take Arakawa under the Bridge. As silly as it is, I take it as a rather fascinating examination of individualism and capitalism.

Can y'all think of any shows like that, which seem one-note at first, but actually have a lot going on?

I think Casshern sins is extremely deep. It has extremely well though out metaphoric messages in most episodes, and can really show you a lot. It teaches you a lot about the human condition, and other things you'd just need to watch the show to see for yourself.

I've noticed a lot of well.....noobs I guess, rate the show low or just disgrace it because of its unique art style (which I happen to think is awesome), and just don't give it a chance or see the message. However, I've also noticed a lot of vets who rate it very highly, and think the same way I do of it.

Um, I think I'm on topic right?

The entire concept of haruhi is very very well done, every single installment of haruhi is related to each other in many aspects. The execution of the plot is done very well, why is endless eight so hated well simply because it was too long. If it had been cut down to 3 episodes it would of been a greater success. Many people were waiting for a second installment for haruhi however they got kinda "trolled" at the 8 episodes.

The more you watch haruhi the more you extract of the story as a whole and not the pieces.

The concept is great.

Nyarko-san has some surprisingly subtle references in it, for a show thats otherwise totally bonkers.

But it is.

+1

I didn't know you were a fan of the Haruhi series.

I have a hard time differentiating between shows with subtle themes and others with more obtuse messages, since either way once I notice whatever it is I immediately go: "AN INTERESTING THING!" And internalize that with the show.

Eden of the East, maybe?

The sequel movies were pretty on-the-nose with the message they were trying to deliver, but the show was mostly about a collection of college-age young adults who get caught up in a crazy situation while trying to find their way in the world.

It also invited you the viewer to consider what you would do if you received $10bn Yen and were told to save your country.
