I like both, but I agree with other posters where there was more and/or better plot in earlier animes (although at times that got really weird i.e. - Ayashi no ceres, and Flame of Recca) they are harder to watch especially on hi def monitors, not just because of art style but SD vs HD even shows only 5-6 years old can have a big difference compared to HD series; compare Mobile Suit Gundam with Gundam, Wing and Gundam 00 or longer running series like One Piece which I recently rewatched from the beginning for the first couple episodes it was weird going back to SD then I got used to it and forgot, then they do flashbacks of older episodes and you're reminded of the diffrence. If I had to I'd probably lean more towards modern series but if it's a good one I have no problem watching an older one

TL;DR: I like new for animation quality, I like old for nostalgia, and story quality.

I love both old and new generation anime. It depends on the anime whether it has a good plot or not. But yea I can't choose between them

Which older ones do you prefer?

Cowboy bebop, fist of the North Star, and rurouni kenshin were awesome. Yea wbu?

as i mentioned in a previous post.

It's about the stories for me . . . most of the old ones aren't all they're made out to be. It's like old American cartoons, people think they were great and most sucked, anime is the same.
There are some shows that were excellent but like today most are lame . . . and I'm being nice.

I can sit and watch some of the lame shows just because they were fun but that doesn't mean they had any real quality in terms of story or plot or even production or character designs. Green-Green is a good example, totally lame show, not even in the realm of "T&A for the sake of T&A" shows but for some reason it's kind of fun to watch.

I actually really like the art in some older anime. I think the non-digital production can sometimes give it a more natural, organic feel, and I've noticed there are a lot of older shows where the character's faces are a bit more realistic (they actually have noses), though some have overall styles that are much more cartoonish than most newer anime, which can be a drawback. What's most important to me when watching anything, however, is the quality and originality of the story and its themes, and there are plenty of thought-provoking and original anime to be found in each decade.

I would say it depends on the genre and story line. For instant an anime including magic looks a lot better with high quality.

I'm an old fan and still love much of the old stuff like Macross and Space BattleShip Yamato but honestly I prefer the new stuff! Not some of the otome based stuff but overall I prefer anime today. Hard to compete quality wise with Blu-ray 1080p and 48KHz 24-bit music. Stories are still good and I like the cute girl stuff so don't mind the moe style at all.

The new animes have better art (not including the cancerous moe), animation and graphics.

The older animes have better everything else. Characters, characterization (back when you didn't have to be moe or kawaii to be a character), better plot, epic storylines, etc, etc.

I'll take older any day over newer.

For the topic it really all depends on the story and characters and less on the art.

But to answer the quoted question may I present

That would be a fun cross over fight to watch.

If I don't like a show, I won't watch it, regardless of its age. As for looks...? There's plenty of new anime that I don't touch out of distaste for the art, so my art preference isn't dictated by age, either. I do like clarity, yes, but it doesn't take long for me to cease noticing any lack of vividity when I'm enjoying a series. I'm perfectly at home watching shows from any era. As far as I'm concerned, all eras have plenty of crappy shows mixed in with the good ones.

See my avatar? Comes from Space Knight Tekkaman, released back in '74. I love older shows, especially from the '70s and '80s, but I have plenty of room in my life for newer stuff, too.
