I'm posting this thread because my girlfriend thinks its not.

Do you think watching TV is mainstream? (Mainstream as in popular)

Another way of putting this is...
Do YOU the people on crunchyroll still watch tv?

I don't watch tv haha. I spend countless hours watching shows on the web (mainly anime) haven't had cable tv in about 6 years, nor do I see the point in paying for a bunch of channels I'll never watch. I will admit that many I know, including my girlfriend would probably lose their minds if they aren't able to follow their favorite shows.

I don't watch tv. If I like a show, I'll either just buy it (HD HD HD HD HD HD) or stream it on Hulu/Netflix.

Mainstream as in popular? I don't think you could get much more mainstream then watching TV. I doubt you could find some one, who's not located in Africa, who doesn't watch it or at least hasn't watched it before.

You could possibly argue that a show on TV may not be mainstream but the actual watching of TV is very much mainstream.

I don't have cable, so I get only broadcast stations . . . there are 33 here where I Live so I don't feel I'm missing much.
Watching TV, Mainstream? YUP.
Going by most of the people here is NOT a reflection of broader society. Most of us here tend to find our entertainment in what most of us would think is better. (Generally I still think it is, like so many things, in moderation..)
In ten years . . . maybe not. The techy people seem to think that we'll be watching our smart-phones as time goes on but I think that's misguided, just try watching a good movie on your Galaxy S for two hours.
After they make an internet-able TV that's 46 inches and under $350 it'll be more about where you get your content than anything else.

The act of watching TV itself? Personally, I don't think it can be classified as being mainstream or non-mainstream. It's just something you do.

What of it? Most people own TVs and most people use it, so you can call it mainstream. But why does it matter if it's mainstream? I barely watch TV, but that doesn't have to do with it being mainstream or otherwise.

Oh, I see. I know people who don't like "mainstream" stuff just because it is, that's why I asked.

Agreed but I still have directv in the house so it isn't gone lol. I'll admit although tv does seem pretty useless considering I mainly just watch anime and don't really bother too much with network shows, if I didn't have tv I would miss it. I always flip around and watch reruns of shows every now and then. I also enjoy watching sports so if I didn't have that it'd be weird.

IMO, no.
Because if you think about it, most people that watch t.v only watch 1 or 2 shows a week, and maybe leave it on a sports game or news while there idle doing other activities. And those same people probably use there phone, laptop.etc 10x more then they do there t.v nowadays.
