It depends how good they are. There are some which are pretty hilarious, which I don't mind. But you should either have only 1 very occasionally, or the entire series should be filler. Anywhere in between and it gets eh. If the story has a plotline, it needs to progress. If it doesn't, don't try and create one.

But I liked excel saga, which arguably, was 99% filler.

Well yeah but that was the point of the anime. The entire premise of the anime being that the Rikdo Koshi sells out for some quick cash and allows Nabeshin to just fuck around with his material. In this case since it was a planned deviation in full from the original work it turned out awesome(assuming you are into bizarre stuff like this as I am). Martian Successor Nadesico did something similar and I think that in its case its own of the few anime I think is actually better than the original material.

Yep. They go so far as to kill him, twice, in the same episode hah.
Sometimes, the less sense it makes, the more sense it makes! I never did watch Nadesico completely. What little bit I did watch though, I did enjoy.

I hate them because they're typically badly written and never brought ever again in the story. The only anime I can watch the fillers for is Gintama because I can't tell what's filler from normal episodes so I don't care.

100% this.

Unless you have read all the manga it is really really difficult to tell with Gintama when you are watching filler.

Then again if I cant tell that it is filler then it must be good filler.

Fillers in of themselves are not bad. They are a fun useful tool that can expand a story and also offer insight into the characters within. Sometimes its also nice in an anime to take a breather and to enjoy world that the story created.

Sadly, I have a mostly negative opinion of fillers. 90% of the time, they seem only for the purpose of extending the life of the anime and not necessarily to enrich the story or to offer the audience the same level of quality that they may expect of a more main-story oriented episode.

Fillers aren't bad I think unless they come out of left field and are a stark contrast to the rest of the show. Example, the game show episode in Ergo Proxy. What the heck was that.

I actually like most fillers in anime which include DBZ, One Piece, Bleach and especially Naruto (along with others). The fillers in Naruto Shippuden are well done in my opinion and they have a lot of heart. People tend to hate fillers mostly because they aren't in the manga, but wanna bet if that Sound 4 filler in the War arc was in the manga people wouldn't be complaining. Most people wont even give fillers are chance and just despises them just because they are a filler. One of my favorite Filler arcs in Shippuden was actually the Six tails arc because that arc actually felt canon in my opinion and we got to learn a little more about Utakata. However, this doesn't mean there aren't such a thing as bad fillers because there are, but i tend to enjoy most fillers so they don't bother me at all. I honestly don't care if an episode turns out to be canon or not because its all still enjoyable to me. On the same topic, i actually enjoyed the recent filler in Naruto because of how touching it was. It made me feel quite bad for Master Chen and it gave us a reminder of what Rock Lee's dreams are.

Kinds of fillers that I hate are the ones that sum up the last 10 episodes of the anime. I mean, I literally just watched those 10 episodes, why am I watching them again?

A good example of an anime with fillers like those would be Chobits. Although the anime was great, there were three or four "sum-up" episodes in that one if I remember correctly.

Not to mention the very existance of Shuffle! Memories, which is a pretty damn good example as a whole. I mean, what the hell was that?

I would rather them say "we don't have any story animation ready yet, therefore we are taking a hiatus to make you better content." Instead of "here is a brilliant filler where we use various flash back scenes in hopes you enjoy nostalgic things!"

I think the game show episode and the Pino theme park episode were great because they fit the weirdness of that show perfectly.

I thought filler just meant it is not in the source material though, so are those two really filler?
I say this because Ergo Proxy was an original project and not based off of anything.

but those other things that happen in their life, didn't really happen. Fillers are basically official fan fiction.

I hate fillers, but I understand and except their purpose
