Children, something can be "twisted", without being a "dark" and "edgy" gore-fest.The number of times I see School Days and Higurashi in this thread makes me sick. Some select episodes of the 1979 series Galaxy Express 999 are quite twisted and depressing, for example, without gore or violence.

[For starters, several yaoi's that will go unnamed], and most recently, Aku no Hana. Gantz , Cage of Eden and HunterxHunter rank pretty high.

Its not technically an anime, but its a visual novel called SAYA NO UTA.

Now children listen carefully. This VN tops whatever twisted anime you had in mind and i just had to mention it.

If anyone is interested, let me know via message.

Here's a hint, everyone: It was created by the guy who wrote Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass. That alone should tell you that you're in for a wild ride.

I'm actually a fan of Saya no Uta, and I really hope it is adapted into an anime someday. Unfortunately, given its content, it's unlikely. Maybe it could be an OVA?

I felt like "Ef - A Tale of Melodies" was. It made me to wait to watch "Ef - A Tale of Memories". School Days had some moments for sure. But I am still discovering Anime everyday, so i am sure I will find more.

From Wikipedia, it sounds like that could top Kara no Kyoukai, Aoi Bungaku, and Mardock Scramble combined.

I want to watch it.

Paranoia Agent - Serious mindfuck is at work there. But it's also my absolute favourite anime.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - And if you don't argue that it's kinda twisted, well...

And Aku no Hana seems on his way to become number three on this list.

Sure School Days had the shock factor for the final episode, but Elfen Lied had a "OMFG I can't believe they just went THERE!" moment every other episode!
