that was the most painful thing I ever had to watch..... and I've seen some horrible movies. within 1:18 minutes into it, I wanted to shoot myself. so I had to fast forward through it. as in click at every seen every five seconds. now I forgot the topic of this thing now.
I agree with jutanotherguy_2. they've never seen it, or even given it a try, so it's just children cartoon to them.

I'm the only one in my group that's really into anime and manga, but I guess I'm lucky because they don't really seem care. I view it as just being one of my many interests (just like football, reading, swimming, etc.).

Also back in high school (when Dragon Ball Z was just a cool cartoon I used to watch) there was a kid that was always reading Naruto before class. I remember me and my friends being curious because he was reading it backwards. Saw some of the artwork and action scenes and thought it was interesting but no one really gave him crap for it.

If someone ever gave me crap for it I'd probably just ignore them like I do with most ignorant people.

I think that anime is frowned upon because most who frown upon it dont take the time to actually watch it and realize that many Anime actually have real meaning to them, much more than your average Reality show. Most people are just ignorant fools who see a weird cartoon in a foreign language and dont realize that many of the concepts expressed in Anime ARE amazing and beautiful and carry some life long messages. Clannad is one out of the many hundreds of examples.

I think it's because the most popular anime that have received international success are the ones that are aimed at kids. Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Hamtaro, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Bakugan etc. are really the only anime that are well known among people who aren't fans of anime (feel free to disagree with this statement, it's just what I think). Because of this, many people don't take anime seriously.

I remember I was talking with my Dad once, and I mentioned a drama anime I'd been watching. He said, I'm not joking:
"There are drama anime out there? I thought it was all just kid's stuff and fighting."

Plus, the sheer fact that anime are 1. in a foreign langauge and 2. animated is enough to turn many people off.

I'm willing to bet that if you sat someone down and showed them Monster, Clannad, Cowboy Bebop, Steins;Gate, Usagi Drop or any other 'good' anime, they would start acting a little more open-minded towards anime.

I understand (and fully accept) that some people just won't like anime, but I don't think anyone has the full right to judge anime in general until they've actually seen a few, rather than just going by what they know from Pokemon. Y'know what I mean?

Hentai. In America, sex is taboo, so the second anime got that stigma attached to it, things went downhill.

I agree with whats been said so far...Like Sheldon says from Big Bang Theory "its not a cartoon, it's anime"
People who aren't familiar with it automatically assume you are into something childish, they don't understand all of the great anime out there that deals with deep content. They don't realize how beautifully animated some of these series are. I always get the "oh, your a silly weirdo" look when I tell people I love anime(even from my mom) lol

I am a normal guy, I enjoy anime, I don't go around parading it and I am cool with it. Anyways Cheers.
Probably one more thing is just being uneducated on the kind of culture around it.

I never want to view anime again now knowing this guy and I share the same 'hobby' of loving anime.

And why did this guy's thread get reported?

My first real exposure to anime was Dragonball Z, Monster Rancher, Sailor Moon, Digimon, Escaflowne, and other things that were shown on Cartoon Network, or Fox Kids on Saturday mornings. After that. there was also Ronin Warriors, Gundam Wing, Zoids, Inuyasha, Ruroni Kenshin, and all the others shown on Toonami, Toonami Midnight Run and the earlier Adult Swim. I've been absolutely hooked ever since!

I have also been fortunate enough to have a best friend that watches some as well. However, I have met a lot of people that can't stand anime, and I just tell them that they haven't seen any good anime yet! What most people have seen these days are Miyazaki films, and that's all that a lot of them will ever watch, sadly. There's so many different incredible anime out there, it's a shame that people have labeled it all as perverted. Just goes to show that ignorance still reigns...

I use to relate, I thought anime was looked down upon by the public, but then I came across a site called 'amplicate.com' which collects oppinions posted on Facebook and twitter and put onto the site. Turns out out of about 100,000 oppinions, 82% love anime. I hope this gives you peace of mind.

I refuse to watch said video because I think youtube is full of idiots personally lol, in short just be yourself and do not stereotype an entire hobby with one guy. I mean anime is pretty popular in the USA despite not being mainstream, I cannot go to any highschool without an anime club nowadays.

I never felt that people frown upon anime. Anybody I know who doesn't like it or "frowns" upon it are just either misinformed, don't like their puns, or generally don't watch animated shows. I think people see anime so generally titled for everything that comes out of the Japanese entertainment industry and just get put off by all of the horrible stuff like that video was making fun of. In Japan, anime is not a genre, more as it's a popular medium, of which has many genres to it. Although outside of Japan all of their "anime" is scrambled into one clump, so it's hard for people new to anime to find what they would like. Imagine if we took all of our animated shows here in America (i.e. SpongeBob, Dora, more toddler stuff, TNMT, Transformers Prime, Avatar, Ben 10, etc...) and just released them all in Japan titled "cartoons" and tried to market them all together in stores. I'd imagine they'd look at the majority of them and "frown" upon cartoons.

There are many different variables to account for
1. Most cartoons excaudate the body for emotion, not the face
2. A lot of the stories are the same
3. People are not use to having stories with no plot
4. Creepy fanservice (moe)
5. Boobs that defy the laws of physics
6. The way that everything links back to porn (blow-up officer Jenny)
7. The dairy mail saying all anime is like “attack of the overfiend” (very old new article)
8. The plots can be overly wired
9. Characters don’t act realistically
10. Dialogue can be very forced
11. Dubs feel very stiff
12. Don’t really want to read while watching a show (you can't use it as background noise)
13. Too many teen animes
14. Many anime character designs look the same
15. Character development can be very predictable
16. At 12ep there very short
17. A lot of one note characters (just stereotypes)
18. People think shounen/shoujo is the same as kodomo
o-o I need two more
