Why Anime is frowned upon?
Posted 5/14/13 , edited 5/14/13
Most of it is ecchi, I guess, and most parents probably would not like their kids watching it. Shoot, I let my sister watch it and she was only 6 yrs old.

Nothing ecchi though, btw.

Probably because anime and manga are for children, pic related:
Just kidding. I think the main reason chinese cartoons and chinese comic books are frowned upon, at least in western society, is not because of the content itself but because of the fans. I don't mean to be overly strident: but compare anime fans to other people on society, just for a moment. I'm sure you'll realize, if haven't already, anime generally attracts a, for lack of a better word, a weird crowd.

People frown upon the obsessiveness displayed by some anime fans and then generalize that to any and all anime fans. And you can't really blame them for doing so, nor can you expect them to change.

Some people think it's just porn. Usually the ones who dislike it are the ones who haven't even really watched it. If they did I'm sure they'd have a completely different view on it.

I am a normal guy, I enjoy anime, I don't go around parading it and I am cool with it. Anyways Cheers.
Probably one more thing is just being uneducated on the kind of culture around it.

Okay.. I have gone such a long time without saying this. After watching all of the videos on "kawaiivids" channel (I must be a masochist or something), I have lost my faith in humanity. I want to get hit in the head to forget the horrors I've endured.

Anyways, I blame people like that ruining the image of the anime fandom. That video has so much wrong with it that it hurts. I love anime, and me and manga are chums, but people who take it to such stupid extremes just suck.

I am an Otaku and damn proud of it

The main reason why people frown upon anime is because they have only had limited exposure to it. Such examples can be drawn from Pokémon, dragonball Z. I remember the days when you would be able to watch these shows on Cartoon Network and these two shows became quite standardised and normal for practically anyone to get into. I think the main line that can be drawn from anime is that usually people frown upon it if the show itself doesn't become standardised , and shows come out that people have never heard off and this is where people start to look at you funny and what not. I have a friend who always tries to talk about anime with me and they can only talk about how they loved particularly sagas and series of the two standardised shows I have mentioned already. It's kind of sad to see that people can't open their hearts to watch amazing shows like SAO TWGOK etc etc, but yeah it all comes down to exposure for me

As mentioned by others above, Anime didn't have the exposure before but that's changing now. Anime is gaining popularity thanks to the interwebs where people do reviews and reactions.

My friends always tease me because they just associate anime with "Tentacle porn". Why is that a thing in the first place??

Well, I think the reason is WWII. During this time, many things Japanese related, at this time mostly manga, were stigmatized. Of course the national feeling of hatred for Japan is mostly gone now, but the negative conotations associated with Anime and Manga simply because they're Japanese are still there.

I don't think possible resentment against Japan for the war has anything to do with it. While this is almost certainly the case in South Korea (were Japanese media was banned for quite some time) and while Japanese wartime ally Germany still retains a stigma in the U.S., Japan seems, at least in my experience, to have been more or less "forgiven" by Americas for the war. This is possibly because they were the only nation subjected to nuclear attacks or it could be because we've started to forget about the war in the Pacific. I think any prejudice that exists against anime and manga in America is because, here in the States, it's pretty much taken for granted that Japanese things are "weird" (whatever that really means) and "weird" things have their haters.

The main reason people do not like anime or view people like ourselves as strange or outsiders is simply because they either do not understand anime or they make assumptions about it. The way anime viewers are looked at is similar to how the homosexual community was viewed back in the 1960s and 70s. You have one or two crazies that do something really out there and just like that, we are all branded as weirdos. Obviously, there is nothing wrong with the gay community. Over the years, we've been able to see that most of them are ordinary people just like you and me. Sure, they have a few people who are a little out there, but that can be said about every group you can think of. Sort of like people who are religious...there is nothing wrong with praying to god or offering someone a blessing as long as its done with good will. It's the religious extremists that make it difficult for the rest of the people who follow the faith with no outward agenda.

Same is done within the anime community. There is nothing wrong with us watching and enjoying anime. Sure, there are some extreme forms of anime, but again. That can be said about any other group or form of entertainment out there. Some people like to really get into their anime by doing things like developing their own manga or going to conventions and cosplaying. There is nothing wrong with that. It's just people expressing and enjoying themselves. As long as they're not hurting anyone, it shouldn't be a big deal.

I remember when I told my ex wife that I liked anime. She immediately thought I was into some weird fetish and didn't talk to me for a couple of days. Then when she came home and walked in on me watching His and Her Circumstances (Kare Kano), she took a few minutes and watched it with me. After that, she didn't have any issue with it. Like most people, they assume its some sort of weird sex thing and they brand people like us as weirdos. Fact is most anime isn't any better or worse than any other form of entertainment out there. There is your ordinary everyday anime, then there is your super action anime...there is your drama filled anime and there is your anime for younger children. Sadly, the only anime that non anime fans seem to know about is some of the really sadistic, out there anime that most of us never even watch or read...and even if you do, that's your business and none of theirs.

The funniest thing I've run into was a guy who made fun of me for reading manga book in a comic book store...as he sat there reading Watchmen.

Urgh.... I try to get people that say "It's just crappy cartoons" to understand how Anime is not crappy at all >_< it's like any movie you can get, and explained in a better way due to free style of art, and designing, you can literally go anywhere with an anime, unlike live-action and soaps where the series is limited to the budget, anyway as some people said above, whenever i mention Anime people say "Hentai" =.= kinda annoys me, also prancig about it like an idiot in that video... that's something i would never do, the most i do is read a manga book or watch an ep on my phone while waiting for something at school or in public, and if someone asks me what i'm doing i simple state "Reading manga", if you just explain to people properly what it is, instead of prancing about like a 5 YO Kid, then people will understand.
