There is little geek culture outlets here in Reno NV. We have one Anime convention that is only starting itself. I decided there needed to be more culture but I'm stuck on what I need to do.

My initial plan was to open a pop culture retail store and sell anime and other geek things to the community when a different idea struck me.

A maid cafe.

Now I know there was one in Las Vegas about 3 years ago that did pretty well but the idea of a american maid cafe is still a controversy.

What are YOUR opinions on the matter? What should I open...and why?

They're controversial? That strikes me as weird coming from a country that loves restaurants like Hooters and The Tilted Kilt.

Personally I've always loved the idea of gamer bars. Where they sell mixed drinks that look like mana potions and health potions then play some video games.

I don't know if you wanted it to be anime themed but that's just an idea there.

That's an awesome idea!

Detroit had a maid cafe and it brought a lot of attention to the news channels. An interview with Ami Nyan who was a maid disclosed a lot of what went on but I think most of their controversy revolved around the fact they were know as a "black" cafe.

Still a "cute hooters" would be what id initially sell it at to try to get more then anime fans to come in.

I think a maid cafe would be a great idea! Heck, even the controversy is a good thing as that leads to media exposure which means free advertising! The "uniforms" don't even have to be suggestively revealing to have it cater to anime fans, as opposed to a place like Hooters. You'll have an audience already, all you need is good food, good staff, and decent prices and you're set!

The logistics are there for a maid cafe to be an instant hit, it's just sustaining it that is the key. The other BBBIIIIGGGG thing of course is the financial aspect of it all to get it up and running.

Right, and I'd have to make it appealing for those who are not otaku... I don't think there is a huge following here.

If you need any advice on how to get started and what to do I'm more than happy to help. I use to be in finance and worked with many startups and a lot of well-established companies too, from restaurants to sports teams. I'm sure there are others on here like myself that would love to see this kind of idea/plan/dream come true

This seems like a great idea but like you said catering to the general public will be tough. Also, like it was said maybe a gamer bar might be interesting as well. Might get a bigger crowd that way. Anyway, good luck with your plan.

It starts with marketing to lure in the clientele, and as long as the service is up to par it should have some continued success. The thing that makes it special is that it is a maid cafe and that will constantly bring in new customers for the novelty of it all. As far as getting it started the very first thing needed is a concept idea of what you want (layout, themes, types of food, uniforms, name, etc.), and once you have that you can then flesh it out to a formal business plan. This will be crucial in getting loans, grants, or partners if you need them.

I've already looked into a lot of the plan. My best friend who majored in business was helping me get that going. However that was the retail pop culture store. Then I thought of how fun the novelty would be and bring to the city if I did a maid cafe which is why I'm wavering.I am thinking of continuing with opening the retail store online and seeing how much revenue it brings, depending on that I may open up the maid shop. ((Since It'd be a pretty expensive project to open.))

Thanks, Momo, I agree with your idea! That would be a bit easier to keep afloat as well as an interesting idea.
