It's kind of amusing...

When I first got onto the internet at age 11, in 1993, my father made it very clear to me that I was never, EVER to tell anyone my real name, age, phone number, address, gender, show them a picture of me, tell them what city or state I lived in, or give them any other details about me other than the fact that I was alive (and that I'm human, though that was debatable since I've gone by the moniker "LakotaWolf" since the beginning, ha ha). My dad always said that if internet people knew where you lived and what you looked like, they would surely come and kidnap you, or at the very least, murder you as you slept.

I took it to heart, and even now that I'm in my 30s, I have never publically posted a photo of myself anywhere on the internet. I don't even have a Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter, and I ALWAYS use the name "Lakota" publically - never my real name. I've shown a few of my close internet friends a photo of myself, but only after I've uploaded it to my own website, and I always delete the photo after my friends have seen it. Sure, maybe they save the photo and then re-post it all over the place, but I can't control that, I guess XD

Nowadays, I guess it's acceptable to have dozens of photos of yourself plastered everywhere on the internet, along with your exact city of residence and your full name. XD It's just kind of shocking to someone of my generation - or at least with how I was brought up. My dad was in IT - he worked for IBM during the dawn of the internet, and maybe he just didn't want to see his youngest daughter getting carried off by a wild internet predator XD

Interestingly enough, my older sister (who is 6 years older than me), did not grow up "on the internet". She did not even use the internet at all until much later in her life - until she was in her 20s and MySpace was well established. She did not get my dad's speech about being wary, so her Facebook page has ALL of her real info, her full name, the city where we live, and dozens of photos of herself :/ My dad would be horrified if he was capable of knowing about it (he has a brain injury and has been disabled for the last 13 years). She's also the kind of person who clicks "YES" on those "INSTALL VIRUS NOW?" popups, though, so... sigh XD

Anyway, I know that's probably some TL;DR crap and I waxed way too philosophical on why I don't have a real photo for a profile picture, but... yeah XD Lakota's my online persona and is a "character" that is essentially me anyway, so I don't make any real differentiation anyway.

EDIT: actually, a clarification - there is ONE public photo of myself out there. When I had to have my beloved German Shepherd euthanized two years ago, I left a photo on my website of my last moments with her - I was hugging her, but all you can see of me is the side of my head, my hair (curly!), and my glasses ;p

I like to enjoy anonymity in the Internet. I only post my photos in Facebook. Only people I personally know and a (very) selected few online friends can see those, the same goes with my FB feeds. I am very particular with privacy. I see no need in posting any photo of mine in this site

Well you know, some people are really so good looking and don't want creepy internet a**holes to hit on them. I'm a good looking attractive person so I do understand why we don't put our faces out there

Granted, I do have my actual picture included in my profile; but I prefer the profile pic I use now, since I use it just about everywhere.

too lazy, plus I think the internet is more fun to use when people don't really know who you are or what you look like.

I guess you have a point. But sometimes people like to remain anonymous. I upload pictures of me in my albums, so that's something, right? I enjoy having my avi anime -or some of my other interests- related.

I was gonna make a I heard you like faces, so I put a face in your face jpg but I got lazy.

Got 2 photos with my face on them in my profile... All people have to do is click "photos", is it really that big of a deal? I don't see a reason to use it as an avatar on an anime forum though or to put it directly on the cover of my profile, this way if people really want to see, they have to use SOME effort... Why would I want my face plastered with every post on an anime forum anyway? Current avatar suites my interests and Alex Mercer is a badass. I don't care if it's anime or not, its a fantasy character that I think is cool. I think everyone for the most part picks a character that they wish they could be/like/think is cool.

Course if you like plastering your face all over a forum with your posts, that's also your business.

As on Facebook, I'll generally hide pictures of myself away on my profile for the discerning stalker. Avatar's usually whatever character I fancy at the time.

It doesn't bother me that I don't know what people look like on here. I basically think of people on the internet as imaginary anyway so even if they are attractive they are just attractive for an imaginary person. And sidenote: I don't believe in "ugly" people, just people who are unattractive to me
