Guest Pass Abuse

Today I received the following message:

Okay,

First, when making a request "Hey Dude!" is not an acceptable greeting.
Second, I prefer proper English. I graduated from high school and am assuming that you did too. Act like it.
Third, you sound like one of those hipsters that go around saying 'YOLO' all the time. That pisses me off in and of itself.
Fourth, the fact that you are brazen enough to message me to ask for one likely indicates several things:
1) You are very familiar with this site and, how guest passes and subscriptions work.
2) You are on the site enough to know that I am a Premium member that regularly comments and participates in discussions and, perhaps, that I don't openly give out guest passes.
3) The above statements and your request itself combine further to indicate that you are likely one of the many free users that attempt to abuse the guest pass system to get around actually paying for a membership.

So, the answer is, 'Yes, I do mind so, I won't be sending you one.' And here is the reason why:
Other than the fact that you brazen request and flippant, uneducated manner really piss me off, the guest pass system is designed to be used to invite potential members to the site with the hope that, when they see the quantity of material available and the quality of the site and videos, they will become paying members and support Crunchyroll as they bring quality, legal anime subs to us.

You defeat this system in two ways. First, you likely refuse to become a paying member yourself or just suck it up and watch the ads. Second, every pass you use is one potential new member lost.

I refuse to support this kind of abuse. I went through getting subs from fan subbing groups through torrents and IRC. While the work was often quality, consistency was a problem as these volunteers had their own lives to deal with in addition to regularly getting shut down through DMCA complaints. I don't know if you ever worked with that system but, if you did, you would know that this sites like Crunchyroll, Funimation, and DAISUKI (opening soon) are ten times better than the old way. Those who came before me and had to deal with passed around bad VHS copies would likely have something stronger to say.

In closing, you need to put up or shut up. Either wait your week and watch the ad supported videos or pay for a membership. It is not expensive at all.

Sincerely yours,

beubanks7507

I am posting this exchange because I would like everyone, members and non-members, to understand what is going on here. On the comments section of every episode of every popular series I see ten to fifteen guest passes just handed out cart blanch for anyone to get. While I understand that everyone wants to help everyone out so that they can see the episode, you are undermining the incentive for many to become premium members. In addition, this is also taking operating funds out of CR's pocket because individuals are not paying or watching the ads.

All I am asking is that everyone be aware of what the effects of misuse of guest passes are and try not to give them out to individuals who abuse them. I know that it is impossible to eliminate it totally but, by paying attention to what we are doing and who is getting the passes, we, as a group, can minimize it.

I really enjoy CR and think it is the best site for anime on the Web. So, I would hate to see it hamstrung or, even worse, forced to shut down because individuals want to watch the shows without supporting those who make it possible for us to watch them to begin with.

Edit:

Hi guys, lets keep this discussion civil okay? No flaming, trolling, or insulting other users. Also if all you have to post is "fansubs are better" save yourself some time and trouble and just don't post okay?

Any form of post that encourages or assists in viewing illegal fansubs or scanlations is going to be deleted on sight, the end.

Also it IS against the rules to give out guest passes anywhere other than the official guest pass thread and or pm's to friends. So if you see comments in a show giving them out, or someone doing it on a forum page other than the official thread and it bothers you... Feel free to report away. If I or any other mod sees it we will delete it. Just like I have done to a number of them in this thread.

I received a similar message, I used to give my guest passes to a friend until he finally decided to become a premium member. The last three guest passes I posted on the guest pass forum topic. It was kinda annoying to get that message asking me for a guest pass though.

Giving out guest passes to whomever we want is a part of the privilege we are given as paying members. If CR didn't want the same people using guest passes over and over they would implement a system that blocked a person from using more than x amount of guest passes per account. This is not to say that I give my guest passes to the same people over and over of course. I am just stating that there is no real issue with it. The people who ask for them repeatedly are people who most likely would never pay for the site in any case and so when we give them guest passes it is simply letting another anime fan enjoy a series when the episodes come out. It will not prevent or deter people from paying for the site if they ever intended to do so in the first place.

Edit: I would also like to point out that the person requesting a guest pass from you was not rude in any way and yet your response to him was, though admittedly not in a big way, rude. Being an ass to people without reason could be considered more of a deterrent to stick around on this site than the alleged guest pass issue.

I don't give my guest passes to anybody, unless someone I know IRL was to ask me so they can "try" CR out for a week.

Here's a great comparison of all Crunchyroll memberships vs. non-membership:

Basically, you have Simulcast Access (new shows as fast as possible), Higher Quality Video (480P, 720P, 1080P), and no Advertisements. Plus a few other perks like a members only forum. It's actually a great deal at a good price.

Hope that helps. Cheers.

I like the quality here, just hung around here before I became a p-member watching the older anime, then SAO came out, I subbed and have been enjoying it since.

maybe a random anime viewer might see the difference with a guest pass and decide to sub, if they don't, they're probably use redbox...

There's also full access to certain premium-only catalog titles, such as Toradora!, which I think is great.

I see two sides to this...

In order for one person to continually have a guest pass active, that requires 15 paying members give them their 48 hour guest pass -- even if they only have guest passes active on the weekend, that's a 4/1 paying/guest pass user ratio.

However I agree with you regarding PMs out the blue for guest passes. That should be a quick way to end up on block lists. That's why I always give out my guest passes in the guest pass thread, and I always have some sort of "task" required (usually trivia) in order to get the guest pass. It at least makes them work a little in order to get the guest pass.

The only time I would ever have a problem with getting a PM asking for a guest pass is if the person was rude about it or demanding. Other than that I don't see how it is such a bother to give a simple response or even click a few buttons to delete the message without even giving a reply.

This guy knows whats up! I think if it was getting to the point where the site was struggling to stay afloat they would create a type of system such as the one he was getting at. At the end of the day people who enjoy the service enough will pay, Some won't, but that is just the way it is.

I just let my guest passes pile up without ever using them/giving them away.
