honestly i think i would have been annoyed as well. but i don't think the large block of text was necessary i think it makes you look like an idiot. and if there was a way to block him on your end so it doesn't happen again just do that its not really a big deal. or you could just report him.

I'm a premium member because I am not poor and I am happy to support the site.

Also, I am pretty sure I would have been banned long ago if I weren't a premium member...

I agree guest passes are abused. However, it isn't my site and I don't really care what other people do.

I don't give out guest passes for the same reason I don't give money to people standing at the median at a stoplight.

I've received a few from 'buddies' in the past, but there's no point asking a random stranger for one.

ignore it it or block the guy why make a forum topic about it complaining and putting the guy on blast? anyways I give my guest passees out on episodes of Hunter X Hunter within an hour of it airing. But I might start doing it for Attack on Titan instead. I also use them occasionally to get a favor done.

Giving out guest passes to whomever we want is a part of the privilege we are given as paying members. If CR didn't want the same people using guest passes over and over they would implement a system that blocked a person from using more than x amount of guest passes per account. This is not to say that I give my guest passes to the same people over and over of course. I am just stating that there is no real issue with it. The people who ask for them repeatedly are people who most likely would never pay for the site in any case and so when we give them guest passes it is simply letting another anime fan enjoy a series when the episodes come out. It will not prevent or deter people from paying for the site if they ever intended to do so in the first place.

Edit: I would also like to point out that the person requesting a guest pass from you was not rude in any way and yet your response to him was, though admittedly not in a big way, rude. Being an ass to people without reason could be considered more of a deterrent to stick around on this site than the alleged guest pass issue.

I dont really think its a big deal, personally i dont send passes to people who send me messages. I did a long time ago, but then stopped. What i tend to do now a days is simply post them on other sites with high traffic. Let their speed and luck determine who gets the passes i post.

I do think people begging for passes is rather annoying though, but i really doubt CR is losing money with the passes. They are 48 hour passes, which severely limits the "abuse" if thats what you want to call it.

Yes, I was rude to a point and I intended to be. For a few different reasons:

First, I wanted to make my statement extremely pointed so that there was no mistaking my intent or opinion.
Second, the request itself is impertinent.
Third, the tone and timber indicates, to me at least, a feeling on the part of the sender bordering on entitlement.
Fourth, I find the lack of an attempt a proper English when making a request insulting in and of itself.
Fifth, this kind of selfishness and indolence should not be tolerated and encouraged.

As to being an "ass" being a "deterrent", if they are just leaching then why does it matter? Really? Why would we want someone around who doesn't want to at least watch the ads so that CR can have the money to pay for it's licenses, site, band width, servers, building, staff, etc. The simple fact is the CR has to have revenue to operate. And by undermining that we, as premium members, are just as guilty as the abuser.

Responding to the portion about it being our "right" to give out guest passes as we see fit. You are one hundred percent right. However, every 'right' generates a responsibility. As an example: The Second Amendment right to bare arms in the US implies a responsibility to maintain and use those arms in a safe and legal manner. In our case, we have the right to give out guest passes but the responsibility to give them out in a manner that does not harm and preferably enhances the CR community. If this means refusing a pass and/or being rude to leaches then so be it.

Okay, but remember these people that would never pay are still using bandwidth, server time and, man hours. Those are not free. So just "letting another anime fan enjoy a series when the episodes come out" is actually something of an expensive mindset. While at the moment it may not be more than a few percent lost revenue, this is something, that left unchecked, could become prohibitive. I agree that this practice will not deter those who were going to pay anyway but, they are not the ones we are discussing. We are discussing those that are on the fence about a membership and those who abuse the system so that they never pay.

As I said in my post, I think guest passes are a great idea if used properly. All I am asking with bringing this to everyone's attention is that we use some common sense and be reserved with them. Also, I like the idea of trivia. At least then we know the recipient is paying attention to the site or show. I may start giving out mine that way.

Lastly, I would like to remind everyone that CR does have a premium membership two week free trial. So, perhaps we should start sending anyone who requests a guest pass there. If they don't sign up after that, then they are just looking to leach and we should deny them that opportunity.

^This. Granted I never got messages from strangers asking for passes yet but if I did I would do the same thing as this person. I only give mine out to privileged individuals i.e. people that I KNOW.

I will probably finish reading your post at some point but right now I have to point out some things.

First, your intent was to deny him a guest pass. "No" is a very clear answer and would have sufficed.

Second, the request is simply asking if you have a guest pass you can give him/her. It might be frowned upon by people but that does not make it wrong to simply ask the question.

Third, given what you quoted I see no entitlement implied in the request. This leads me to believe that you just assume and automatically look for this sense of entitlement in every message requesting a guest pass.

Fourth, the attempt at English was bad? I see a few very minor mistakes. You see all those things in bold on your post? That is what I found in just a few moments. People make mistakes. Get over yourself. It is people with egos like yours that ruin communities.

As to being an "ass" being a "deterrent", if they are just leaching then why does it matter? Really? Crunchyroll is set up so that anyone be it a premium member or a free account can come and enjoy the site and what it has to offer. Those people who come here whether they are "leeches" or not have the possibility of telling their friends of the great site they found and those friends each have the potential to become a premium member and pass the word along to people they know as well. If CR was really losing so much money because of it they would change the system.

Any guest pass given that allows someone to enjoy the site and makes them want to keep coming back enhances the CR community. This site is meant to enjoy anime and other shows and there are some who just come here for the forums. Are they such a huge detriment to the community and site? I don't see it that way at all.

I can't be bothered to break down your post any further. I believe I have made my point with it.

What are the perks of having a membership?

Here's a great comparison of all Crunchyroll memberships vs. non-membership:

Basically, you have Simulcast Access (new shows as fast as possible), Higher Quality Video (480P, 720P, 1080P), and no Advertisements. Plus a few other perks like a members only forum. It's actually a great deal at a good price.

Hope that helps. Cheers.

No video advertisements. We still get advertisements in form of deal of the day and inside videos if you scroll to the comments you will see more store advertising. So, saying NO advertisements is false. Other than the annoying advertisements that should not be there for premium users the subscription is a very good service.

I think this guest pass thing is getting out of hand as well, but I think it's need on Crunchyroll. Whenever I get those messages I just ignore them.

Some people aren't allowed to have guest passes. Like me. As long as I'm living under the roof of my parents, they won't even let me spend money on something as "stupid as watching streamed anime online." But I'm okay with watching anime with ads. And it's better when I watch it on the app, too, because all the commercials stream first before the video, so I can watch the rest of it ad free! I'll admit, i take advantage of guest pass codes I happen to find, simply because I can't buy membership.

Really, this shouldn't be a huge issue. I can see how it's irritating that people pester you for guest passes, but a simple "no" can be okay. Or make it clear on your profile.

I'm also not going to waste my money on something I probably won't use from time-to-time, because school gets in the way, and sometimes there are days where I just NEVER come on CR. So a 48 hour guest pass is all I really need at times. Is it such a crime? Isn't that what guest passes are for?
