Kalashnikov 47 (AK47) Overrated?
Posted 6/20/07 , edited 6/20/07
Me and a friend had a heated discussion on the AK47 aruging that the AK47 was OVERRATED for its larger calibur which would have a higher percentage of inflicting a critical wound over a AK74. What are your views on this people? i mean i pointed out that the accuracy on that thing is like trying to hit a quarter with a .357 from like 3 miles away and its like trying to blow up a apple with a BMG2 >.>
who actualyl thinks that the AK is SO strong that, thats the bad part about it?
such a big round causes to much recoil which kills accuracy. and for the gun to handle the round it needs to be uubar sturdy so its kind of a circle.... DX

you need to be patient with a gun like that in long ranges, and a maniac in close-quarter combat that would be my usual strategy. feels good to come from a family of WW2 veterans and Marines.

The whole point of the Kalashnikov was to produce an easily made and serviced gun from the cheapest possible material. It's inventor (a Mr. Kalashnikov) has stated in an interview that he is disappointed by its use as the weapon of choice of militias around the world.

Why is it so popular?
1. It works! It works in Russian winters, it works in Sand-Storms, not something which can be said about most other automatic weaponry (especially the American MG series).
2. Availability. If the Soviet Union had not collapsed the international gun market would be nowhere near as flooded with AK47's. They were churned out in vast quantities to fuel the USSR's (and it's allies) armies. Those armies then did the inevitable and sold on their weaponry in order to survive in the post collapse struggle.
3. Easy. It is easy to clean (takes a relatively short time to service) and use.
4. Power. The Kalashnikov has a horrific rate of fire. Despite being inaccurate the noise it produces and the large rounds striking surrounding objects would be enough to scare even the most hardy of soldiers.

Finally. I would not condone the use of this or any other form of automatic weaponry. (preferably this or any other form of mechanical weaponry, except for hunting)

The popularity of the AK47 isn't its functionality, it's the price tag.

the point of the gun is not to be some super accurate expensive gun.. the point of the gun was to be cheap, deadly, rugged, and easy to manufacture automatic weapon.
personally i'd choose the AK 47 over the M16 due to the fact if some guy hide behind a tree you could still blow out their brains. Also the fact it is really easy to clean, the AK 46 has what about 4 removable parts? Also the banana shaped clip allows for quicker reload time then the other weapons of it's price range and not to mention with a lot more bang. And this gun does jam often maybe like 1 in what 200,000 rounds, Good for the front line soldier. This is really why a lot of terrorists use the AK 47 and soviet produced weapons. A truly remarkable achievement in the history of guns. Oh and just if u haven't noticed it was designed right after WWII and it's still running today, that by it self is remarkable. it's like a 60 year old gun and it can compete with the newer 21st century guns.

JUST REMEMBER THE SOVIET MOTO IS POWER OVER ACCURACY, U DON'T HAVE TO HIT SOMETHING IF U CAN JUST BLOW IT UP

Well its not overrated.
like some ppl already said, the AK 47' is simple, and many countires have theyr own versions of "the" Kalashnikov...it's so simple that Bulgaria, Czech Rep., China, former East Germany and many other countries have developed their own types...
and on african blackmarkets like the one in Mogadishu, you can get a used AK 47' in exchange for a Cow or 50 $ (est.2002) but in recent years the country that provides many crisis with AKs is China with some different Models of the 47' and 74'....

You do know they replaced the AK-47 with the AK-74 in response to the M16? But I know what beats the AK-74: A headshot with an M16.

Accuracy? The AK-47 is not meant to shoot a target from 5 miles away. It's close range.
It's power, availability, easy to use, loud, which as henz_Ian has in her post, can scare anyone to sh*t themselves.

You want greater power and accuracy? Get a Barret M107 .50 caliber sniper rifle. Google it.

Btw, I'm not really interested in weapons that much. xD I just play CoD4 and CS:S.
