allow me to blow your mind, then.

Japanese animation was originally inspired by Disney cartoons.

What if all of modern culture was derived in some way from western culture? Thank god that the blues and Hollywood was successfully contained inside of the borders of the United States of America.

The blues? Like the music genre? If so, you are crazy, the blues is a great style of music.

I think what I was trying to say is it influenced everything. I like Muddy Waters, man.

Oh okay, I though you were trying to say that thank god the blues stayed only in the US because it was bad.

No my bad. I was just being a sarcastic asshole lol. Anime is obviously a byproduct of western culture getting pumped into japanese culture after world war II.

That would be pretty cool. I mean, I'm proud of the entertainment America produces but I do love my anime.

As someone already noted, anime was actually inspired by Disney cartoons, but it's still a worthwhile thought experiment to consider what would happen if the west developed what we traditionally consider "anime" rather than just children's cartoons.

My theory is that it would suck. I think anime is as awesome as it is now because it takes on cultural characteristics from Japan that we don't have here in the west. Some of these include:

A high value for cuteness (instead of sexiness)
An emphasis on language and storytelling rather than action
Over-exaggerated emotional reactions

Those are the ones that I can think of off hand. But then again, if the west produced anime, at least we wouldn't have so many series set in high school lol.

But then you have to consider what the Anime culture change would have created in America. Maybe Americans lean less towards sexiness and more towards cuteness and Japan goes more towards the sexiness themselves. Same with the other two.

I mean, our generation now was created through how we were brought up and how things evolved. They could have potentially evolved different if we were brought up on a different style/form of entertainment (Anime instead of cartoons, etc).

I don't know if culture would be different so much as the shows we watch. Then again with American audiences I could imagine that this anime wouldn't be much different than what we already see, quick 15 minute stories meant to entertain, not to tell a story. It just wouldn't be the same

Oh ho, an even more interesting proposition. Anime influencing the culture rather than the other way around as I was thinking. That would be incredibly awesome then. Imagine if Hollywood devoted its resources to making quality anime instead of movies and television. I'd have a reason to turn on the TV instead of just the computer lol.

If they could do it right I would be right there with you. I don't have or want cable as I don't watch TV, but I love anime so it'd be epic
