Really anime right now is the way the US and Japan are still some what in touch with each other since WW2 besides dipomats. It gives some view for us Americans at how the world looks from another angle. I really wish we had more shows from other nations but UK and Japan are the only ones right now... and really they are more influenced by the US than the other way around.

a good number of people have grown up on anime without even knowing what anime is. when I was a kid, I used to watch shows like Astroboy, Sailor Moon, Dragonball, Voltron, Transformers, Robotech...

If one assumes that anime would be more or less the same and it was fairly popular, it would be a pretty big difference. Everyone would be lining up to see the next Evangelion or Gundam movie in theaters instead of Iron Man or The Avengers. TV would hold a much bigger place in media compared to movies because you wouldn't need as large of a budget, allowing for many action shows to be made as well. Mecha shows and the like would probably take the place of comic books and comic book movies, or at least make significant in roads. It's also likely anime would become popular in Japan as well, as American blockbusters get released all around the world, including Japan.

Japanese animation was originally inspired by Disney cartoons.
