Escapism, pure and simple.
Watching the trials and tribulations of someone you can relate to can put your mind at ease.

Any sort of entertainment can be considered escapism...just like watching a movie or reading a book or playing in a band. When I feel like getting away from it all, I don't just go watch anime. I do all sorts of different things. I was mentally ill way before I got into anime. I'm a writer and I liked some of the stories I came across through manga so anime made sense to me. I also read various other books and as expected, I watched some of the movies and shows they spawned.

There is no connection between mental health and anime, the voices tell me so.

I've always Wounded why anime attracts people with mental health problems especially aspergers and depression. I myself suffers from aspergers and depression and so do a lot of my friends who like anime. And none of us can really put a finger on it. But this seems to be unique to the anime community. Is it because most anime communities are accepting and generally safe place to to be or is it because people with mental health problems see something in anime that they can't get from more mainstream media. for me when I watch Anime for does 5 or 10 hours I dont suffer from aspergers and depression I'm Just lost in the story. But what do guys think.....

I personally don't think they are directly correlated for everyone, people are attracted to watching anime for different reasons, I always liked watching Anime since I was a kid, and have had depression and anxiety issues since my teens, but it didn't become true escapism for me until 2011 when my dad died suddenly and then 8 months later my 17 year old nephew was murdered. I didn't know how to deal with what life handed me, and my worsening depression and anxiety. But I found that watching Anime was the only thing that helped me not go into a serious black hole, that I would never be able to crawl out of. I can watch it and laugh, be angry or even cry and it has been very cathartic for me.

Even before I knew of naime or manga I suffered from depression, so maybe it is just something else?

Maybe for some, anime and manga provide that relief away from the regular world where they feel alone and isolated - it provides this escapist fantasy where it is only them and the adventure.

I think that there use to be frontiers, want to change you life? then head over that hill. Also, life was shorter and deadlier so you needed to hurry up and get things done instead of taking your time growing up in your parents' basement. Even the NEETS were colonizing the BBS and creating the Internet from hand built token rings made of wood and stone.

They say: the Meek shall inherit the Earth,
I say: the rest of us are going to the stars.

Yeah I don't suffer from anything like that too although I feel sorry for the people who do. If you find comfort in watching anime or reading manga then by all means please continue to do so but never imprison yourselves in your own world stuck with no one but yourselves to talk and socialize with. We all need friends but I guess there are still special cases..

I have quite a few mental health problems but I just watch anime because it allows me to escape this sucky reality and all the douchebags within it. = ) (with the exception of my fellow anime viewers, but only the non annoying ones..... )

Buuut, I've come to term with everything in my life so it's all fine.
