I went into Clannad completely unprepared for what I was going to get. I thought it would just be another romantic comedy or something, but I ended up completely devastated by what I got. I have a soft spot and Clannad hit the bullseye.

I honestly don't feel that I ever want to watch it again. Any anime that turns me into an emotional train wreck gets 1 viewing and that's it, since I don't want to relive that experience.

Someone mentioned Anohana and that has an equally, if not more so, powerful experience that will send you to tears. For those that have seen it, I really broke down when

Now, as much as I hate being reduced to tears, I also seem to gravitate towards these kind of anime. There are so few anime that can evoke an emotional response in me, so it's really a nice change of pace when I can become so entwined in a story and/or the characters to care enough about them to bring myself to tears, anger, etc.

KEY does a fine job at extracting sympathy from viewers, but if you really want to hit the waterworks try playing the VN

~just started dl'ing and playing VN's and I must say, some of them have superior storytelling than most animes I've seen

I know that this show is a few years old, but did anyone cry? I do not easily cry and this show opened up the tear ducts again. I have NEVER gotten so emotional with a show. Did this happen to anyone else or am I just a woose?

Yes, my eyes did sweat a lot during this anime.

I guess I'm still the only person who didn't think Ano Hana was all that great. A lot of it felt forced and melodramatic; all the angst seems a little weird given that Menma died years ago and she isn't even really dead, just invisible. I never understood why she wanted to move on so badly. If I were her, I'd probably just continue hanging around as a halfway-corporeal ghost.

Clannad, on the other hand...all I can say is, keep watching no matter how painfully depressing it gets, because things do get better in the end.

I haven't watched it yet, you guys are scaring me with all this sadness. It's always been on my watch-list but, I don't know if I want to watch it now....

This also goes to anyone else who hasn't watched these.

You definitely HAVE to watch it. There is a reason why this anime is one of the tops in many lists.
This is a very, very amusing show. It's a whole lot more than just a comedy. It might bring you to tears. but it's really quite funny.

If you are going to watch it, make sure you have a lot of free time because you may not be able to move for some time. Make sure to watch "Clannad" First, since it is season one. And then go to "Clannad After Story", as it is season 2. There is actually a movie, but it's basically a retelling of both seasons put into 90 minutes. So I recommend you forget about it since it isn't that great IMO.

The story is originally from a Visual Novel made by a company called "Key". This company also has people who does an amazing job with music.

They now have 4 anime adaptations from their visual novels. which are Kanon, Air(TV), Clannad, and Little Busters.
Kanon has two anime's. One made in 2002 with 13 episodes. Another remade in 2006 with 24 episodes. They're both the same, but Kanon 2006 covers more of the Visual Novel, It's also more visually appealing. Sure, the opening makes it seem like a chick show. If someone ever walks in on you listening to that, just tell them the truth. "This story is originally from an Adult game aimed at males" since the male protagonist has 5 romantic choices.

Key was also involved with Angel Beats.

So yeah, highly recommended to watch all of these shows they're involved with. ;p They are all great. Oh yeah, Also Steins;Gate. It's not from Key, but I just finished re-watching it, and it is amazing.

Kanon 2006, Air (TV), Clannad/AfterStory, Little Busters, Angel Beats and Steins;Gate. Sure, they make you shed tears, but that's what's great about them. Even the manliest man will shed tears. The only people who won't cry are heartless people and people who are too busy on facebook.

One of the only two animes that ever made me cry. That scene with overflowing canola flowers where Okazaki finally accepts Ushio was my favorite one.

I also went in to Clannad knowing nothing and it absolutely gutted me. Perhaps because I'm a parent, but it was definitely the most emotionally draining series I've seen. People have suggested Ano Hana, saying it is equally emotional, but I don't think it is at all. It was an ok series, but I don't think I cried at all and some of it was pretty stupid.

The only anime where after I watched I couldn't sleep that night and for a whole week later I was still affected by it. Season 1 a must for character development and season 2 for what everyone knows in this thread. I knew nothing about it before I watched it. And wow... I never expected what I felt. Man tears? Yes.

Clannad was, in general, a sad anime, indeed.

I remember my eyes watering twice in the first season. In After Story, my eyes watered twice AGAIN, and I ALMOST CRIED..... but I didn't.

For those who are getting afraid of watching the show, don't be afraid. It's not depressing all the time.
I was perfectly sane after I finished watching it, and you should be, too!

Clannad and the After Story both had quite an impact on me. I didn't cry while watching either one, but I definitely felt the sadness. This series is near the top of my list and I'd recommend it to just about anyone. At first it might seem like it's just a harem comedy, but it doesn't take long for it to show you that it's much more than that.

Clannad lead to me to seek out the other Key works that were mentioned as well (Air, Kanon, and Little Busters!). I would give just about any title Key is involved with a shot based on Clannad alone.

Menma had passed away in Anohana, something I was surprised they didn't try to hide at all. She came back as some kind of ghost that was capable of influencing the world around her despite only being visible to Jinta to fulfill a goal. She wanted to move on because

That's my interpretation anyways. I agree that it's not the best show ever since it's hard to get a really good feel for and care about all of the characters over 11 episodes, but I enjoyed the overall experience and I can understand why people put it on the same level as Clannad in terms of sadness.

Looking back at my list I keep track of when I finish my anime. I must say that looking back on clannad now, it didn't have the "first key" effect. I never really wanted to research the series nor did I bleed (cry) for the anime. Again a small portion of the community gathered and discussed all the possible endings after story was going to take and we kinda nailed it with the happy end. You might read this post and think this guy is heartless. I did bleed during Kanon and only Kanon. I will say that the combination of knowing clannad's ending and not knowing kanon's was the difference for me.

I will go as far as saying clannad is a bit overrated for its case. Since the time it finished it has shot up .2 points from its original ending rating. Of course this is due to so many recommendations.

Honestly this anime has condemned many other anime and most try to set clannad as "the standard" and it really isn't a standard just another anime that happened to pull out a decent ending.
