I think Steins;gate. There were lots of subtle references for people who watched syfy stuff. I loved it. Well, I watched the dubbed version. I don't know if the references were the same in the subbed versions.

This many posts in and no mention of...

Shuffle!

The anime is actually pretty good, but I could do without all the fanservice shots they have in it.

Genshiken and Oreimo rule this genre, IMO.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw the title was "Welcome to the NHK" which theYchromosome already brought up.

Girls und Panzer
I felt like it was catered to people who loves tanks. Although I'm not a tank fanatic, there seems to be a few tank movies/show references here from what I've heard.

Clarification: I am using the word "otaku" in regards to Japanese society, not the Western term that's just "big anime fan".

Most of us are aware that anime can often pander to certain demographics (i.e. military otaku, BL fans, meganekko appeal, etc.). These can range from subtle "in-jokes" and undertones to very obvious content.

Have you ever seen an anime that takes its demographic fanservice to a level of direct pandering to its specific audience?
What is the most otaku-pandering anime you know? What characteristics made it this way?

Samurai Bride, Chobits, Freezing, Ikki tousen...(the reboot is crap just bring back old school ikki tousen), Horizon in the middle of nowhere, and Humanity has declined just because a lot of people like it and it's terrible. There's tons more I just can't list them all.

Well, if someone's bringing up Girls und Panzer you have to mention Upotte!. I mean that show comes packaged with a firearms history lesson each episode.

It was already mentioned, but I thought of this one immediately when reading this...

High School of the Dead

They make jokes about it right in the anime (about acting like characters right out of a manga)
They have the gratuitous fan service
The military/weapon fan boy

Oreimo comes to mind immediately. It's anime within anime.

Kodomo no jikan.

Either this anime is a cry for help in the Japanese education system or this anime exist to cater those creepy lolicon otaku. I think more on the latter than the former.

Lucky Star, Mawaru Penguindrum, Gintama and Ouran High School Host Club are the only ones that I can recall at the moment.
