Sometimes when I read through threads in the forum I noticed some people are banned. Some are temporary bans and some are banned for like 50 years lol. Do people get a ban from trolling? Or illegal use of the account?

Just trying to understand the system so I can prevent myself from receiving a ban!

But I don't love cookies, babies are too ugly to eat and there are some horribly ugly kittens out there.

They typically get banned for not following the rules.

But sometimes the mods just like to ban random people for random amounts of time.

Banned for breaking forum rules. You should read them.
They exist for a reason. And no, this site isn't a democracy, it's a company, not a country.

Please give some evidence to that, because they do not ban 'random people' for no reason. Every ban comes with broken rules. Every one.

As far as I'm aware, none of the moderators ban people just to ban them.
If you feel that is happening, please let me know and I'll look into it.

But yeah, basically just use some common sense when you post.
Don't be a jerk.
Etc.

Sometimes its not even obvious what they have done for the average poster. For instance creating multiple accounts is against the site rules, and I think we'd be surprised how many people that spontaneously get banned for "no reason" when actually they have gotten banned for a previous offense on another account, and then try to slip pass the ban with a dummy account.

Hi there,

People get banned for many reasons. It's basically because they repeatedly broke one of the site/forum rules. I usually reach out to those users first and warn them of what they're doing wrong. But for small stuff like double posting, I tend to just edit their post for them and give the user a message reminding them not to double post. Or if I notice that they're having a heated argument, I tend to delete their posts and warn them (be it in the thread or in PM) to cool off.

Basically, if the user is respectful and/or realize their mistake, I let them off with a warning. If they're rude, disrespectful and unapologetic, they usually get more sanctions put on them. Usually in the form of a temporary ban (with the length of time dependent on the severity of their transgressions and if they have had previous warnings/bans).

But honestly, most of the time, people are left to their own devices. However, there are a few things I absolutely do not tolerate and that is being blatantly offensive to another user or posting offensive material (pornographic or otherwise.) Also, if you're banned and decide to make another account, be prepared to have your main account banned for a very long time. We do not tolerate ban evasions for any reason.
