I'm not so sure this was a good idea. Are you certain this will encourage people to get a membership or encourage them to go to illegal streaming sites? Even people with memberships went to illegal streaming sites when the Attack on Titan episode was late.

I've had a membership before but when I realized that I couldn't watch some of the shows I wanted because it wasn't available in my area, I deactivated my membership and opted to see them elsewhere. Currently I only watch Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titan and Hayate the Combat Butler and those are all in the space of 2 days so all I needed was a Guest Pass to suffice. I didn't pay but atleast I was using a legal site. Now that I can't use the Guest Passes, there are still many awesome anime not viewable in my territory, I only enjoy 3 anime on this website AND my computer can't play 1080p or 720p without lag, I guess I won't be as active on Crunchyroll for the next 6 months or whenever I can use Guest Passes again.

You used a guest pass to watch anime vs waiting a week and watching it with ads to support cr and japan. You are just a leech with a crappy computer. Is it that hard to wait a week and watch it with ads? For you and others it is probably life threatening if you don't get your instant gratification of 22 minute cartoons. Life must be so hard.

No it's not hard, I just prefer to watch something sooner as opposed to later as most people do. And I believe I gave a set of reasons for why it won't be necessary for me to use Crunchyroll as often anymore but you chose to disregard them and instead criticize me for watching the shows elsewhere. A leech? I've spent my money on months worth of anime membership so do well to watch your accusations. I'm sure you too have used illegal websites, as every anime fan living outside of Japan has, so please do climb down from your high horse and humble that superiority you pose for waiting a week to use a legal website like the hero you think you are.

You aren't contributing to CR financially, so should they really care that much if you go elsewhere?

I haven't streamed or downloaded a fansub since July 2010, and have no plans to do so.

No, why should they? I mean even if I were a paying customer would they care? They have thousands others. But they should care that they are most likely encouraging people to see anime elsewhere and decreasing CR's visitor frequency which would also reduce the possibility of subscriptions.

Well congratulations but you see for those of us anime fans living outside the US and don't have the privileges of accessing legal streaming websites like Funimation, Hulu and all the region locked anime here on CR, it's a little hard not to.

If someone is visiting CR only because they get guest passes, and would resort to fansubs rather than free viewing, they aren't a very likely candidate for membership.

If a grocery store or restaurant offers free food samples, and a group of people keep getting samples, but don't buy anything, most would not keep hoping you would eventually buy food. They would be far more likely to bar you from getting more free samples. CR isn't even doing that; they are just limiting how many you can have.

Your statement didn't exclude the U.S. and Canada. Your statement implied any anime fan would resort to fansubs if they couldn't get what they wanted legally (or soon enough, for that matter). We don't get all the anime here either, but I don't resort to fansubs for what we don't, even if it is something I would like to view (i.e, Space Battleship Yamato 2199).

That's just not true. The free food sample would still bring in a crowd and there is always someone in that crowd who buys something. They would be insane to ban the visitors for something they wouldn't be losing out on in the first place, considering it was free all along.

Do you know how many CR anime members went to illegal streaming websites when the Attack on Titan episode was delayed to an undecided date? If there were no legal streaming of Attack on Titan are you telling me you honestly believe even the majority of anime members here wouldn't resort to fansubs? It's rather presumptuous of you to tell me what you don't get legal streaming to considering the already large amount of anime you are entitled to as opposed to those outside the territory. And you already admitted to once using illegal websites, so that superior demeanor you're boasting while judging people who still do is quite hypocritical.

Bro, we get it your cheap and a leech with a crappy computer. Why are you getting so heated? Just admit who you are and what you are and you will feel alright. And CR isn't banning people, just limiting the amount of guest pass people can use. It sucks that you will have to use torrents and wait for them to download vs begging for a guest pass and streaming it, but you decided that. Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free, amirite?

Considering people have been banned for abusing samples, I don't see how you can claim "That's just not true".

You also seem to be confusing stopping free samples altogether with simply banning specific individual(s), which is what I stated. Much like a store can post a "don't accept checks from these individuals" list, they can also point out the person to the employee handing out samples, and say, "Don't give any more to this person".

No, I don't know, and neither do you. We only know the number of people that reported they did, and those that reported they would wait, but both were a very small number compared to the 200,000 plus membership. The overwhelmingly vast majority stayed silent on the matter.

BTW, even when I watched fansubs I never used them for a title that was available for legal streaming, even if it meant waiting.

Yes, I once used illegal websites. I don't any more, and haven't in almost 3 years. Which is morally superior: The person who was once a thief, but vows to steal no more and follows through, or the person who continues to steal? The alcoholic that doesn't drink anymore, or the one that continues to abuse alcohol?

You appear as a person that is desperately trying to justify their actions by attempting to paint everyone else as exactly like you.

Indeed they could, but I believe CR doesn't permit the same e-mail address to be used for two active accounts. While it isn't difficult to create additional e-mail accounts, it does take a bit more time. The people that are on the tipping point of buying a membership instead will do so, while the majority that have plenty of time and no money will do so (and risk getting caught and banned) or just resort to fansubs.

Watching with adblock may get rid of the ads, but you're still stuck with only 360p and a week delay.

I expect if Adblock became a real problem, CR would implement something I've seen at a few other video websites; refusing to play the video if it enabled. If you want an example of what I mean, see if you can play a video at Revison3 with an adblocker on.

While only being a site mod on CR and having no actual access to CR sales data I can tell you do I have a large amount of real world experience in customer interaction and sales. Statistically speaking a customer who is going to buy your product will do so after trying it once or twice if you give a "free sample". People who have had 10 or more free samples and still not purchased... again statistically speaking... are not going to buy your product regardless of the continued offer, or lack of, free samples.

Simply put this will make some users face a choice of continue to use CR or quit using CR. Most will do like you said and probably no longer use CR. However, some will finally go ahead and sub after having the choice forced. So just to be clear, in the end... CR's greatest source of stable long term profit is Subs, not ad views. As a result this move can statistically speaking only help CR as a business and honestly it was long overdue.

I actually enjoy the "commercials" or in-stream advertising.

I really wish there was a paid "premium" level, say $3.95 per month, where I could pay for better quality video (480p & 720p), yet still have the in-stream Advertising. Maybe at a paid level, the Ads could all be of the 15 second variety. I prefer my shows to be broken up in segments -- Open [commercial] Part 1 [commercial] Part 2 [commercial] End.

Personally, I've never used Guess Passes except for a 15-day freebie that was recently given out to members. I think limiting the use of Guess Passes by CR is an excellent move. I'd resign on as a Paid member as I once was if only I could still have the advertising to segment the episodes.

Guest passes are overabundant due to the increased viewership. Before they were rare and where meant to be given to people you know. But now, even though people throw them out randomly for others to pick up, the numbers are so great, that you can find an unused guest pass in 5 minutes if you know where to look.

For example, here is something interesting I found: the guest passes on the latest episodes are usually taken within minutes, BUT, if you go to the previous episode, there be a guest pass sitting there for 2 hours that hasn't been picked up yet. And if for some reason that's been picked up, go the episode before it, and you'll find a guest pass that will be nearly a day old and yet untaken since most people will be hanging out at the latest episode asking for guest passes.

This was my secret to getting a guest pass every week in 5 minutes. I'm going back to subbing now, initially I canceled due to being busier and was gonna come back when the semester was over. But when ever I checked CR during that time on weekends, I accidentally found guest passes on a hunch and have been doing that ever since. The semester is already over, so yes, back to subbing it is. Also, I was wondering for the past few weeks if there was a Guest Pass limit. For some reason, I thought it would be 5, and then I started realizing there might be no limit. So its a good thing they put down this limit.

...Now, let's just hope we don't get any people who ask others to buy them month-long memberships.

Hey, if that ever happens, can we report those people?
