This is my first time posting in the forum, so forgive me if I do something wrong. Before I go crazy, I'd like to explain the situation.

After plenty of time spent watching anime, I have heard it called plenty of things from plenty of different people. For me, it seems like the top three phrases are; "It's like Pokemon, right?", or "It's a F**** up cartoon", or my personal favorite "ANIME PORN!".

What has your habits been called by the people surrounding you that have nothing to do with any other culture other than their own? Has your Otaku (Western Definition) ways scared people away, or brought some kind of strange reactions?

I can't even have my Hatsune Miku keychain without it being called gay.

Conclusions of the thread can be found here:

This information gathered has made me smile, think, and over all happy! I wasn't expecting this much input, and it made for an amazing experience for my first time posting here. Thank you all for the help, it's appreciated!

Mmmm, people haven't yet called it an embarrassing name, other than "that weird Japanese crap."

I can sort of understand if people are close-minded about it, but this term up here ^^ pisses me off. Saying "it's just a cartoon" is understandable, seeing that they have only known it from Toonami, but some people are so judgmental

"I saw Sailor Moon, didn't like it," is not a proper excuse for disliking anime, but I have to let it pass for most people. However, people that see Cowboy Bebop on tv and say "Oh it's that Sailor Moon crap" are just being ignorant.

Edit: I have irritating family members, if you haven't guessed lol

I don't really have any friends that like anime. I just decided to not even try to talk about it after receiving several spiteful remarks when trying to explain some of my favorite animes to a few people.

My circle of friends is small and they run the gamut from loves anime to knows of it but doesn't watch. They just call it anime and don't give people shit over their hobbies and I do the same for their hobbies. My family members just call them Japanese cartoons.

Same here, espeacially the latter is what they called it. They laughed. Luckily my firend is in the same class as I so at least he understands me because he loves anime too. Those guys left me alone because they know how far can they go making fun of me without consequences. . .

I understand what you mean, I have my small group of friends as well, that has somehow grown large because I have moved, multiple times, and then became friends with more people. In result, we get this strangely large gang kind of thing going along, and it's fun to the least.

I can't bag on anyone who doesn't know exactly what it is, but don't you think that they should keep from saying things they just don't know? I know you expressed this point, but I'm refreshing it for conversational reasons. I love Anime, and I may always love it, no matter how similar one anime may be to the next. I love "Normal" things too, such as video games, outdoor activities, friends, my girlfriend (who was at one point ignorant as well), and every day life.

I'm not weird for my interests, just as they're not weird for theirs. If I don't flame anyone for their interests, what do they get out of flaming mine?

Also, my family is irritating in some angles, but my mother has watched a few shows with me like Clannad, and loved it.

I'm guessing that your social life in some sense comes before your personal? I was like this at one point, though you should correct me if I am wrong.

I just asked my friend what his opinion on anime was, and he said, "it's pretty good, as long as you don't buy the films. I've only watched 2 anime films and they were both crap."

FYI, those two films were My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away, so eer... >.>

I know a few people who watch anime. It really does irritate me when people make fun of watching anime and start making comparisons to other shows. They should start watching anime before making such remarks; i bet they wouldn't say such things if they watched attack on titan

"They" think it is just like the kiddie cartoons only made by the Japanese in the Japanese style and don't think I should be watching that stuff at my age.
