In public, the most common pet names I use are "you" or "hey" or *insert actual person's name*. I could not ever see myself saying "baby" -- ever. I have on occasion used "babe" in private, but it was slightly uncomfortable, and I don't do it often. Their name just sounds more comfortable to me.

As to using it with friends, I could see someone pulling it off with the right personality. It has more to do with whether or not the person saying it is well-known to the person who's being talked to. It'd probably be fine.

I'd replied : " you must be asking for a death wish "

but if a special one call me that.. I think.. I have to find a hideout first

I get that at work from customers quite a bit-"hey babe, where's the motor oil?" I sort of take it as a casual acquaintance term of familiarity for the guys who use it.Sometimes depending on how it's said it can be a flirtation.Baby is a much more intimate term of endearment, in my opinion, and I'll let you know in a heartbeat if I don't think you know me well enough to address me in that manner.Women tend to use the term Hun or honey more and I look at it as a casual term-you have to take into consideration the tone of the person saying it.I don't get upset or take responsibility for the respect of woman kind-it's just not that deep.

i'd be like, "do i look like i'm in diapers punk"

I hate being called names like that in general. I like being called Sophia or Sophie and that's it.

If it's a stranger, I'm put off. I don't really like being called "baby" by anyone. I prefer being called "babe" only by my significant other. Other terms of endearment are usually fine with me depending on the person.
For my close friends, once I start calling you my "boo", we have gotten to a serious stage in our relationship.
My co-worker and I call each other boo at work and customers will sometimes think it's cute or be confused, because I'm quite boyish in looks and my co-worker is a handsome man.

I don't mind being called babe if I've been with the guy for a while. I like sweetheart or hun best. Every time I over hear someone calling their significant other baby it always sounds forced and silly to my ears.
