Just Watched Fate/Zero from Neon Ally and I must say the visual quality is great. But the dubbing of the anime in English sounds kind of off. I don't know if it's because I watched it in sub first and my ears are just used to the Japanese voice actors...

Anyone else in this section watched Fate/Zero in Dubbed yet? And if you did can I hear your guys thoughts on it.

I watched it subbed a long time ago. I read how people rave about Death Note being one of the greatest dubs of all time, but the dubbing was absolutely awful in it. Especially with Light's mother. So from my personal experience with dubs and from listening to the dubs people think are the best (when they're actually very poorly done) I'd have to agree the English dub is probably off.

Usually it's a combination of monotone reading, incorrect inflection, mispronounced/overemphasized syllables, and bad translation.

...I've heard 11th graders read English in iambic pentameter better than this dub.

I didnt think it was very good im not a dub fan anyways i perfer subs something about it just captures the feeling and emotion in the voice much better than any dub.

I normally try to allow at least one year between watching the sub of a series and the dub. The second half of Fate/Zero ended in late June of last year, so it may simply have been too soon.

Umm ... Dubs are generally really bad, so it's nothing new.
If the voice doesn't express the character well enough, the dub has failed and that's the weakest part in English dubs. They just can't make their voices feel natural. Every time they say a japanese name, it sounds like a kitten is being killed and the voices just aren't fitting.

If you want to see a good english dub, go watch Desert Punk. That anime has the best English dub imho.

The dub wasn't too bad IMO, and I think the cast fits their characters for the most part, but Kirei is definitely lacking the deep, evil timbre that only Joji Nakata can provide. Liam O'Brien makes Kariya GAR as fuck though.

I guess it isn't that bad but still not a big fan of it.

I watched in in sub. and loved it. Dubs often ruin a character for me, with the exception of Dragon Ball Z.

The dub sounded pretty good to me, I have nothing against it. I watched Fate/Stay Night in dub, so some of the voices sounded familiar. Also, I agree that some of the Dubs out there are really bad, but that doesn't mean all of them are.

I never watched the subbed version, so I don't really have a point of comparison, but to me the dub sounded just fine. Then again, it takes a truly atrocious dub for me to not enjoy the series. My main example would be Buso Renkin, where I swear the lead voice actor sounded like he had a cold through the entire series.

Saber is still not captured right. Other than that the only real problem I have is Waver and Kariya's voice. I guess Kotomine can sound way more monotone but that's being a little too super critic. I don't think the dub is bad. It is good. I said it. Its good. Not great or perfect but good. The dubbers aren't here to try and imitate the Japanese voices. They are English voice actors not not imitators as said by Bosh. But even so it could have been better.

TL;DR? The dub is good at best.

MELODRAMATIC INFLECTIONS.

Considering how prevalent ADR use is, why do these always sound like bad Shakespeare impressions.

No, if they gave Saber a British accent then they would have to give every character one that has one and some we don't even know what they sounded like. For instance, Gilgamesh.

The dub is good as it is. The voice actors/actresses aren't by any means bad. I wouldn't really compare them to the Japanese cast though, as that would be unfair and we all know everyone here is biased towards subs (ok, most people). Saber isn't off, and besides, it's only the first couple of episodes (as far as I know, four are out), and there are twenty one more episodes for the cast to get into their roles more.

Question: Did you actually listen to the Fate/Zero dub other than the trailer or the first episode or two?

v people like this guy are exactly who I'm talking about, about being biased.
