What do you guys think about the quality of anime that comes out these days? Are they better or worse then the old ones? In my opinion I think that the old ones were better here's a list to explain some anime that came in for 99 to 08 and then some anime from 09 to 13.

1999-2009
Cowboy Bepop
Dragon Ball Z
Ghost in the Shell
Spirited Away
Full Metal Panic
Death Note
Pokemon(originals)
Yugioh
Sailor Moon
Eden Of The East
Haruhi Suzimiya(all of it)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
FLCL

2010-2013
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
Deadman Wonderland
Steins;Gate
Ao no Exorcist
AnoHana
Hidan no Aria
Mirai Nikki
Guilty Crown
Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko
SAO
Shingeki no Kyojin(Attack On Titan)

*Note* These are what were popular and these are just some off the top of my head not all of them so please don't hate. Also on the 2010-2013 I know I missed a lot of ecchi anime but I did not want to have maximum bias.

Ah yes and today is the 5th year anniversary of Death Note release.

Define what you mean by quality. Also, no anime from the 70's, 80's, or earlier 90's? For shame.

Well that's really old but you get my point. I mean buy the plot and characters, like just to group those 2 groups of anime and compare them to each other, which one would you buy or which one do you like more? We can all agree that the quality of anime has gone down though meaning the plot and such from something like cowboy bepop and fullmetal alchemist to oriemo and Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. Not hate to AOT though.

I try to refrain from comparing and contrasting the two types, because "old" animes set the groundwork for "newer" animes to build upon.

now your idea of quality is ambiguous and I'll just interpret it as an overall summation; with that said, I would pick the "newer animes"

why? because of PLOT:

Whats wrong with Oreimo?

Also why are you comparing Oreimo and Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko to Cowboy Bebop and FMA they are completely different genres.

If I were to compare the best contenders from the current anime to those of 10-20 years ago then I would say the quality is about the same, I mean sure there's a lot of bad anime out there but there was also a LOT of bad anime 20 years ago, its just that nobody seems to remember the bad anime from 20 years ago and simply points out the classics as if it was a golden age of anime.

In fact I can list a lot of good anime from the past several years.

Fate/Zero
Bakemonogatari/Nisemonogatari
Kids on the Slope
Angel Beats
Clannad and Clannad After Story
Hellsing Ultimate
The Kara no Kyoukai movies
Spice and Wolf
The rebuild of EVA movies
Welcome to the NHK
Everything that Makoto Shinkai has ever made
Toradora
Usagi Drop
etc,etc.

I also agree with Shrapnel that excluding pre 99 titles is very narrow minded.

Martian Successor Nadesico is one of my all time faves and it was released in 96, and Neon Genesis Evangelion was made in 95 and still ranks as one of the most popular anime of all time.
Not to mention Gundam which started in the late 70s..

There'll be outstanding shows every decade. It's just that the older they are the more prominent they become, since we also forget all the "noise" of the not so great shows that surrounded them at the time.

No, that's selective bias; you're acting like everything back then was a Cowboy Bebop or FMA, which is ridiculous. And I also hate FMA with the passion of a billion suns, so the relativity of personal opinions will also play a role.

Everyone have different views on different series anyways.

Some people likes old school shows like the Gundam Series, Ghost in the Shell, FMP, FMA, Sailor Moon, etc. Others likes the current trend of ongoing titles. It's also too early to judge AOT right now as not even half the series has aired yet.

Comparing Cowboy Bebop and FMA to Oreimo and Henneko is a bit outstretched here. They don't have much in terms of similarity, at least in terms of 'plot'. While I agree that some of the ongoing series today lacks a bit of plot compared to old school titles, there are definitely some titles that are enjoyable. It's kinda different for everyone I guess. Also, not everyone judges a series based on just plot. I think it's one of the more crucial factors but not absolute. There are series that are enjoyable without an interesting plot to hook viewers in.

More appropriate would be comparing Gunbuster and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, for instance.

I was giving out a list off the top of my mind of popular anime back then and now, you can compare and contrast all the others ones you can remember I'm not saying that everything was CB and FMA and I respect your hatred towards FMA.

I don't dwell in the past, and am enjoying the new titles. Mostly the ones with unique, or interesting story line.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure should be on the list. One of the best series for 2012.

Btw OP, are you referring FMA as the original series here or Brotherhood? The two has great differences. I personally didn't enjoy FMA that much. However, since you're referring to series that are in the old school days, I assume it would also be the original FMA being referenced here.

I dont think either of those lists truly show the great stuff that came out during those times. To be fair though, anime from 1999 - 2008 has a much higher chance of being better than shows from 2009-2013 since there is a 4 year difference. That means that the older shows had 4 extra years to make quality products, which is a whole lot.

If you were to say anime from 2000-2006 and anime from 2006-2012 i'd say it would be pretty even.

Also, many of the shows you mentioned didnt even air in the late 90's. DBGT was over by like 97 I believe and Pokemon which started in 97. Sailor moon ended in 97. Not to mention the OG Ghost in the shell movie was from 97 or 98.

But yeah i think we see them as worse because only the good shows survived for all these years. While watching current shows we see all the crap that is getting released alongside the shows that will last from years to come.
