I'm going to have to agree with Ink-e. Most definitely both. In terms of the actual industry, it fluctuates in terms of better or worse. I don't like all these energy/time based games but that seems to be the going trend. The advance in technology makes graphics nearly realistic which is a huge plus for me so yeah... its really both.

Oh it gets worse as publishers and developers start shipping out the same mindless sequels (that people tend to swallow up), and as developers, develop games that cater to people who want to put minimal effort into playing; to be quite honest games will be marred in repetition unable to innovate and just sticking with what works (if it ain't broke, don't fix it). Not to mention games are being dumbed down towards the point where the game itself does the thinking and work rather than the players.

Although to be fair that is just my cynicism speaking.....Plus shouldn't this be in the gaming section?

The sequel issue is one of my biggest concerns. I really dislike playing sequels unless I have played the rest of the series (unless there's issues sourcing a game). I don't know where the average stands but I assume they just play whatever is new.

There's still loads (loads) of games to be played but with the Xbox 360 dominating for such a long time, from a technical point of view games have not grown in the way they used to (absolutely massive growth between 1993 and 1999 for example). Now there are games from 2007 that could have been released now (and vice versa).

Also, with the Internet and the rise of affordable gaming PCs plus console downloads you would think people would play a wider range of games. However (generalisation alert) more people play just a few franchises than ever?

Worth considering. Let's see what the next batch of consoles bring. Hopefully a kick in the right direction/s!

I say weirder. With things like the Xbox One kinect upgrade to the oculus rift. It's only a matter of time before we have neural implants that hook us up into a digital world.

I'm going to start programming my SAO universe now. Except with guns. And lasers.......

But seriously it is a bit of both. Can't have the exceptionally good without the bad.

I will admit though, they need to realize that big games can come in small packages. They've essentially set the trap up for themselves where most game productions can't make a simplified game without getting ripped apart. And that's because they try to keep feeding demand instead of saying "ROFLMAO. You get this shit when we feel like."

I'm looking at you Square Enix and Valve O_O

Gaming is getting too business-like. It used to be about the games, now it's mostly about the $$$.

Xbox One is going to fail.

"But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend's house and play there? You'll have to pay a fee—and not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that game—in order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says. "

I agree in the sense that games used to take more chances, push the envelope, more edgy characters and content etc.

I agree that gaming is getting both better and worse. Graphics are getting pretty impressive, but storylines and characters are starting to be overused.

There's also the downfall of Nintendo. They're playing with all these innovative technologies, but people just aren't receiving them well.

Things have kinda picked up for survival horror RPGs as of late. Even if resident evil totally went astray there are some good games still coming out. Survival horror, RPG, and a very few FPS horror games are really like the only games I care about.

Still waiting for FFXIV to get out of beta so I can finally go back to playing a MMORPG. Couple of buddies are going to join in.

I just keep waiting for the games to keep up with the tech. Consoles have kinda dumbed down the actual graphics and physics of the games making it hell for us pc gamers.

and the DRM sucks.... thanks to the music industry , gaming has caught on . There used to be a time when drm was limited and companies figured in piracy as a cost of business. Now you screwed either way you go , console or pc.
