I'd have to say that the gaming industry is worse off on the whole than it was 10 years ago. For instance, in the mid-2000s, start up companies could produce AAA titles with limited resources and a 20 man staff. In the coming years most of these smaller companies were bought up by companies like Crytek, Electronic Arts, THQ, and others in order to use their assets or bail themselves out of dire straights. As a result of consolidation, it seems like most of the remaining AAA game developers are not risk takers, so games are homogenized. This can be seen through the explosion of the FPS genre after the success of Halo and Call of Duty, as well as the current trend of Free to Play gaming on PC, since games like League of Legends and DOTA have gained so much popularity.

It is true though that with consolidation of resources companies are able to produce aesthetically pleasing games, however many times these games lack the substance of games produced by smaller companies like Arc System Works or ATLUS. Another good thing about the current industry is that independent developers have a chance to create and sell games, for instance games like Skullgirls and Super Meat Boy were produced by independent entrepreneurs who spent their time and resources to create, fun innovative games. In the past games of this type would likely not have been licensed to Sony, Microsoft, Sega, or Nintendo. Due to the rise in "Indie" game awareness though, these games have been able to succeed in the mainstream market.

While there are certainly things that I dislike about modern gaming, I think that the future could prove to be worth the wait. While I don't think that the Xbox One will be good, I am holding out that the PS4 will shape up to be a worthwhile piece of hardware. The gaming industry has changed rapidly over my lifetime, and I look forward to the future. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I'll always love my PS2, and I don't think that any gaming experience will beat the first time that I played Free Radical Design's TimeSplitters 2.

It grows bigger every day, so that's a plus, but if you take into action what's happening to EA currently, then worse. It's fitty fitty

I think people are just running out of innovative new ideas. When it was first starting out, everything was so new and exciting. Now, all we get are better graphics. It's rare to encounter great new concepts. The most we normally see are new twists on old things.

Judging by the latest bland pc games, Wii U, Xbox One and PS4 first impressions, doesn't seem like gaming is getting better.

At least we'll have the older (and better) consoles. I miss games being games.

I agree that gaming is getting both better and worse. Graphics are getting pretty impressive, but storylines and characters are starting to be overused.

There's also the downfall of Nintendo. They're playing with all these innovative technologies, but people just aren't receiving them well.

Hey look at the bright side!

At least we're no longer this

I sure as hell wouldn't want to work in the industry right now... unless I had the opportunity to work at Valve or CCP.

I have been pretty disappointed with both the ps4 and xbox one revels. there was just no wow factor for me and the things they did add just made me thing that they are nice features for a game developer but just don't seem like the direction a console developer should go in. In terms of individual games however I can without doubt say things are getting very ugly. Im tired of playing sequels. How many cod are out there? or assassins creeds? They all feel the same to me and I'm dying for some originality.

all problems would be solved if sega just got back into consoles

Honestly? The whole 'gaming consoles = entertainment systems" now bugs me. Focus on games hasn't been taken away....YET. But i feel like with every generation of consoles the focus on gaming will shift and gaming consoles will just turn into the 'ULTIMATE BLU RAY PLAYER". Xbox one seemed like the dumbest name when i first heard it. After watching the full reveal video on Spike though I changed my mind, it fits it perfectly.

It's hard to say, it has the possibility of getting better, but it's not always the case. It really depends on the developers and the the style of gameplay.
