I mean, technically I own a Katana because I own a full tang Tensa Zangetsu, but I got it because of that, not because it's a katana. Other than that, I have a short blade, the Kukri from Resident Evil 3(movie) regular Zangetsu(that thing is a beast. Actually had to practice to be able to swing it properly) and I want a full tang chinese tai chi sword at some point. Also would love a Bastard sword if I can find a decent battle ready one.

As a side not, anyone know where I could find gauntlets like Kenichi has in History's Strongest Disciple? Preferably ones that can actually be used with martial arts.

Katanas are just typically more pleasing to look at as far as I am concerned. I find I like their designs more.

Katana's are very cool, but i prefer a spear/lance OR EVEN a Great Sword over them, simply because i like the designs of bigger weapons.

You should get one of the larger swords by Cold Steel if you like big blades that can cut for real. I swear, every Cold Steel sword is overbuilt and their katana handle more like crowbars. Their greatsword is something like 7-8 pounds and it is a monster. Their gross messer is like a katana on 'roids....it can chop through phone books with ease.

I watched a documentary which praised Katana's as the best swords made in existence. It was the pretty much the ultimate sword, before the era of firearms kicked in.

I actually favor the halberd, with Winchester rifles, knives, and cavalry sabers on the side. I'm not sure what it is about the katana, but the movements feel very awkward for me, especially since I'm not a big fan of two-handed swords in the first place. The swinging motion and positioning that comes with using two hands doesn't feel right, to me. I can't get comfortable with even positioning my hands. I don't own a spear yet, but I've practiced with wooden and metal poles. I feel like I've met my match whenever I go through the motions, which I assume is a good thing. I get a similar, but lesser, sensation with Winchesters, knives, and sabers. I have a lovely Model 1860 Heavy Cavalry Saber at my disposal. The saber is a bit heavy, but I just have to get used to it.
I have a piece of crap, Chinese-made "katana." I just like to look at it, though, so I don't care if it's worthless. I also own a bokken, which I like alot more. I keep that near my bed as a convenient and non-lethal self-defense weapon, in case of burglars. I also keep my Winchester close at hand, but I'd rather avoid ever having to use it. Clawed gauntlets and neko-te sound nice, so I want to eventually try out a pair of each.

If you talk about why they are Incorporated in the design of a character out of eastern origin. Well:The katana is hailed as one of the strongest swords.

If that were true, swords from all over the world would have evolved into the form that is a katana. A katana against plate armor would be useless, as just one example. They were made to be hard and slice well, but they still break against most things that aren't Japanese armor and flesh.

Well I can believe all your points. Really I do. But you seem to respond/quote to me implying that I said "it's the best sword'. But I said "The katana is hailed as ONE of the strongest swords".Whatever it was made for is irrelevant to your reply. I've watched many documentaries on samurais and katana's.Good number of them do include your knowledge. But also review other features of the katana and the various types of them. As well as the different types of steel used to forge them, and the make up of the user's body can also simply bend your words of merit slim-to-none

.Most of these documentaries hail them, not as the strongest sword. But acknowledge their strength as one of the top types of blades. This gives some developers an excuse to use them in design of a character.Mainly if they feel that their audience will receive design choice of weapon as "too bold" for using an eastern weapon.Honestly in opinion I believe the Crusaders swords to be the strongest one's I've known. You can contradict this though.

I like the katana because they're easier to draw and lighter than their eurpoean and southwest asian cousins. That said i have a long list of weapons I favor more than the katana but as far as 2-h swords go its the top of that list.

Curved blades are designed to cut, whereas straight blades are designed to thrust. Both have sharp tips and sharp edges, yes, but they are simply designed for different purposes and thus should be ranked based on how well they do their respective jobs.

Metal is metal. Craftsmanship and purification and heat treatment methods dictate toughness (how well a sword can take a beating without breaking) and hardness (how well a sword can hold an edge). Focus too much on toughness and you end up with a sword that can't hold an edge. Too much on hardness and you end up with a brittle blade. The Japanese are simply one of the few who craft swords using both tough metal (spine/body) and hard metal (edge) to balance these traits. Of course this puts them over the top of those that just hammer metal into sword-like shapes and then sharpen them. Swords intended for use against armor are thicker than the katana and have a diamond-shaped profile for added strength and more tip durability for thrusting (more effective against armor than slicing). Katana have more of a wedge or V-shaped blade that is obviously intended for slashing. Their curvature makes this even more apparent.

Weapons are designed to do damage a certain way. They ought to be evaluated depending on how well they do what they were designed to do. Comparing a katana to a European broadsword is really like comparing apples to oranges.

I can't have guns in my country, but I can have swords.
Right now I own a set of 3 bootleg blunt katana swordt which are displayed on my chimney because they are cheap and it looks cool. (Do not be mistaken, they can still hurt plenty)

I do want to add a Bat'leth and a couple of western swords to my collection though. But those are quite expensive.
