I swing a 2 lb 4 oz double edged Gim. I use it for both Yang and Sun style. I'll get my double Yang style in about two years from now. Maybe someday the Shaolin sets, but I think I'm getting too old for the Shaolin material (I'm pretty weak at my age).

i have a Katana, but only cause i'm an actual practitioner of Kendo, i however i think a blade equally as sharp, a easier to maintain is the Swabbie.

the video below shows some of the best weapons on the planet.

to kill and get away with it, blame their death on a shadow (which will probably get religious or smthing and people will say a demon or ghost did it when in reality it was a high level ninja with a katana)

Haha, interesting debate. This topic immediately made me think of a couple of tropes used in fiction:

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KatanasAreJustBetter

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EveryJapaneseSwordIsAKatana

And for a slightly more humorous take on this topic:

Like others have said, katanas acquired their mystical status because they look pretty awesome, thanks to anime and eastern action films.

To slice up snowmen in the winter, what else? It's extremely fun. More than it should be.

Killing with a blade is an art....so to speak...the katana is an instrument of deadly beauty designed to do just this...

besides, the katana is easier to lug around than say, a cannon..

In some martial arts they require you to specialize in a weapon as you progress in the higher ranks. You often get to choose; when It came time to choose a weapon I actually chose a pair of tonfa and haven't regretted it. They are still my favorite martial arts weapon to this day. Probably because I was able to incorporate my boxing training with them.

I'm not a fan of the katana.

so you dont really have a style preference as much as just a sword aesthetics preference?

I have a katana, hidden and hilt-less. but I also broadsword, a bastard sword and even a foil. I also have over 30 knives, two spears a kukri and an axe. All of my blades are functional, not those fancy prettied up blades that would break if you tried to open a can of baked beans. Most of them are antiques, but many are recreations.

I want a scimitar but I can't find an original or one of quality.

If you like blades, you like blades. As far as swords are concerned, you hear about people owning katana more often because they're popularized in anime and big budget movies, like Kill Bill. Aside from the popularity derived from entertainment media, it's also one of the most efficient blade designs. Compact, light weight and yet very durable(If it's a quality sword and not just a show piece).
