I just thought this might be an interesting thread, as I had this conversation earlier with some friends, and we actually were talking about who the best anime heroes were (and then genders of the best heroes became a topic).

Me personally, I am a male and I generally tend to prefer female leads (big shocker I know). It's not that I like to gush or pant at how pretty they are the whole time but I get a kick out of a girl showing strength or bravery and what not. It's a thing, you know.

However, some of my favorite leads have been males. Not necessarily because I think they are badass or strong but because I think they made the show. Oreki Houtarou from Hyouka comes to mind, he is such an awesome male lead. Shu from Guilty Crown is one of my "guilty" favorites because I love how he starts so weak but becomes so strong. I owe a lot to his amazing voice actor. I can sort of live vicariously though male leads like Shu, seeing as I am a pretty typical non-stand-out-ish guy who internalizes a lot. Edward Elric left an intense lasting impression on me as well.

In the end though if it were my choice what gender the next big anime being created would be, I would pick female. I guess it's a complicated feeling to explain. Heheh.

How about you? What are you favorite leads that back up your preference?

I am a female, but prefer a male hero. I might upset the feminists here by saying I quite like to watch men stepping up to be the hero and saving the damsel in distress. However, a lot of my favourite characters are also female.

Hayate (the combat butler) would not be anywhere near so awesome if Nagi, Hinagiku and Maria were always fixing up his trouble. More famously (perhaps) while Asuna (Sword Art Online) is one of my all-time favourite charaters, Kirito is the amazing hero, although they often worked together. Another example is Full Metal Panic's Chidori and Sousuke

So I guess I quite enjoy a strong female character, but if there's a male to save the day, I'd prefer that storyline.

i prefer female characters.. idk why.. i always make female characters on video games (and not only for my perverted reason to see how good they look in skimpy Armour (or none) I think i get a wierd satisfaction in putting men who think to highly of themselves in there place? idk.. its some how satisfying to see a girl win... to bad in real life im way to competitive to do such a thing for any gender, as my ex-GF's know all to well >.>

I prefer male characters because I feel as though they are usually better written. Japan's sort of got this sexism thing going on in their media, where the females are rather two-dimensional, but the males have more depth...but so does the Western world, to some extent, so there's not much we can do about it '~'

(And I know that's not always the case. It just tends to be the case more often than not)

My main anime genre is fantasy or adventure, so a male hero fits more then a female, but I'll watch one with a female if the girl is a good heroine, and not annoying or needing protection nearly 24/7.

I'm male. And I don't care what gender the hero is.

Lightning is an example of a great heroine.

A hero's sex doesn't affect me liking them or not. As long as the anime is good and the hero/heroine are likable, then it's all good

I'm not really bothered in the grand scheme of things but I do always like to see strong female role models in literature, animation, movie etc.

For some reason i really cannot stand a female being the main character anymore. Even if the show is really good, the minute i see a girl as the main character i am immediately put off. I am a girl myself and i know it is kinda sexist and stereotypical but whenever there is a girl i tend to think drama, romance, weakness, clingy, and just all the things that annoy me. Except for my select friends, i find myself thinking that i don't really like girls at all. I used to watch shows with females as the main character and liked them, but something just turned me off of shows like that all of a sudden. It has even carried over to my love of books. Kinda makes me sad really. No, i don't watch any shows that have a female as the main character anymore. Just cannot stand them. Not even a little.
