What's the greatest invention?

Salad dressings. Imagine if they were never invented... how many times must you eat lettuce and tomatoes with a dull taste.

To make things interesting you can only name one.

I'll go with the internet because it changed the way we interact.

The NFL, no explanation needed.

Hm, I'm not sure language is an invention, more of a phenomenon since animals need to communicate somehow.

Best invention of all time...? Probably cookware. Mmm, food....

I WAS going to say toilet or toilet paper, but now that I think about it, it's a tossup between antibiotics and immunizations. A lot of us wouldn't be alive today if it wasn't for those. Imagine dying or losing a limb because of a stupid minor infection from a cut on your finger......

Wait....how about soap too.... Imagine a world without soap........

Tough to say..

- Agriculture (our species would have died out LONG ago without it)
- Controlled Electricity/Light Bulb (no electricity, no Internet, no cat pictures)
- Vaccines (needless to say, our lifespan as a species massively improved because of these)

- The modern assembly line (this is what gave birth to the middle class in America and is probably the only reason you're not living in a box down by the river today).

- Child Labor Laws (the reason you can sit on your butt and play your Xbox so capriciously)

- The printing press (the single invention that nearly wiped out ignorance and gave rise to independence among the impoverished)

- Modern plumbing (fresh water and being able to dispose of and treat human waste is probably the single thing that raised us out of the muck of poverty)

Some people have mention the Internet, but it was really the "World Wide Web" (HTML) that changed how we interact. HTML changed everything, but "the web" is not the Internet. It's just a protocol among various protocols (e.g., FTP). The Internet as a network has been around since the late 60s/early 70s.

There are plenty more. I honestly don't think there is one single invention that I would call the greatest. So many great minds have invented many things over the past 1,000 years that have brought us here today, that's it's impossible to narrow it down to just one cog in the timeline.
