I typically ask friends or ask for a recommendation. Also if a show has received enough hype then I will give it a shot or if an anime was made by the same people that made one of my favorites than I will watch it too. I'm down to watch nearly anything though

There seems to be no one way how to choose an anime. Interesting is the role reviews seem to play. For some they are helpful and for others not. I guess at the end of the day, we may look at other sources, but ultimately our choice to watch is based on our own opinion of it

The combination of factors seems to play a great role in our choices. It's awesome that sites such as Crunchyroll fosters an anime community by keeping us updated trough news on upcoming anime and allowing forums and user reviews on specific genres or seasons Not to mention provides us with plenty of awesome anime to watch, try out, and pick and choose!

I heart Crunchyroll

Multiple answers. A lot of them are quite trivial, but then again, I've found some series I really like through these methods, so here are some of them:

Might be randomly browsing TV Tropes, and stumble upon the page of an anime that seems interesting. Sometimes I check out a series just by that.

I play StepMania (freeware DDR with downloadable songs), and have downloaded quite a bit of anime songs to the game (OPs, EDs, insert songs, etc.). If I find something awesome that way, I might watch a series just because I like any given song from a series.

Hell, sometimes I just pick a series randomly from Crunchyroll.

And of course, there's word of mouth and reviews, but they're kind of a given. Thought I'd give my own ways of finding stuff.

I usually try everything and then eliminate the shrill and childish that doesn't capture my fancy. I will try to watch at least 3 episodes if I'm not sure. I have pretty eclectic tastes, but am attracted to Seinen, Sci-Fi, Sports, Yaoi, and fantasy. Since I only count 8 that I'm not watching, I'm clearly not that picky.

From episode 1 and the characters.

IF I can't connect with the characters, I can't watch the show.

The description helps a lot for me. I rarely give any stock to reviews on shows / movies (there are exceptions but they are Few and far between). The genre doesn't matter much to me As I can ascertain that by the description and cover art 98% of the time So I Know what to at least stay away from lol After all that I try to get past the 1st Episode . That's how I ended up watching like 5-7 Shows this spring season !

It usually just depends on my mood. If I've been watching romances for a while, then I might get tired of it and the watch an action. If I'm sick of a bunch of twisted, confusing story plots, I watch a random funny anime. If I haven't watched a sports anime in a while, I'll most likely want to watch one. I guess I just like to change things up.

Usually start with a google images seach for /a/ recommended anime. Then search a bit on ones that I think I might like and eventually pick something to try out. Working well, so far I've enjoyed everything I picked.

I check recommendations of myanimelist, then check trailers or first episode. I watched so many first episodes...I droped a lot of anime right in the middle or 1-2 episode from the end too..the genre depends on my mood

It's sometimes luck that helps you get to the right anime. But to help me stick to watching a show, it really has to have certain depths to it - intellectually, emotionally, philosophically and the humor must be natural... It has to have good foundations, concepts are well explained and those explanations must not take a whole episode. It has to flow along with the movement/actions of the characters and so the story pace will never get me bored. Anime's like this for example is HunterXHunter... There are never really filler episodes. Every episode of HxH gives answer and support to every other episode. Like if you delete a single episode, it's definitely gonna affect the whole thing. There are so many animes that do not meet this criteria. Like if you delete an episode, everything's fine. That sounds good but that's not good. A good story for me is not like that. They are all fiction so for me to watch it, it has to have well established plot, story and concepts.

Attack on Titan started out really strong but it started to break the rules I wrote on the first paragraph. No excuses, even though it's included in my top three. I sure hope though that it'd still continue to deliver great story.

Never rely on the appearance of the display pic.

But how do I know if a certain anime would have these features that I look for? Well, there's a strong gut feel.. Most of the time it's correct. Plus when you look at the 5 Star ratings, I notice that the more solid the 5 star ratings are, the greater the chance that the anime is good.. If you see a lot of 5 stars but then notice a considerable number on 1, 2 or 3 stars too, then there's a good chance it only appeals to a certain age bracket and those other disapproval most likely came from more mature viewers, and the bulk came from teenagers:)... If it has mostly 5 stars but doesn't seem to have a good following, it's a good one but didn't have teenage followers that's why it didn't sell and got discontinued.

Usually I come across some Clips on the internet. And if I like what I see I watch an episode or two, then I go from there.

Unless it's Gundam, in which case I will watch it Religiously.
