I'm disinclined to call Free! yaoi any more than I'd call K-On yuri, but I agree with the rest.

Well...I would think it's ultimately fair to say that Free! has yaoi undertones. K-On isn't exempt, I think most would agree in saying that it has yuri undertones.

If you're disinclined to agree with that much then I'm going to simply take some snapshots from the episode and wonder if you even paid attention as I post you a litany of examples.

There's definitely manservice all over the place. It doesn't mean any of the guys are gay though. Although many fujoshi will probably pretend they are (or at least bisexual); just like there are guys who pretend the K-On girls are lesbians.

That was the only distinction I meant to make.

Edit: No objection at all if any of them do turn out to be gay either. I just think it's unlikely.

There's a lot of subtle gestures from a few of the characters that would seemingly intend to give you the impression that they are more comfortable physically and emotionally with other males than most heterosexual males.

So I'm not necessarily stating empirically that they are gay...but some of the things they do are "gay". Though this is a wide base of interpretation that could be left to a persons life experiences.

Also, I don't think the show plans to even come close to fleshing out that factor. I doubt this is going to be an anime about any of their personal sexuality issues. I'm only calling it how I see it. I'm not saying it's worth discussing what the real answer is...but that's just what the episode gave us. Clear as day in my opinion.

I think it's an element of the fan service, if I'm to be honest. Can't get around the fact that it's gay-ish though.

Think during the scene where they are walking through the abandoned building...Makoto's persona is indiscernible from that of a female. He even clings on to Nanase's jacket with two fingers, and girlishly yelps. I can't remember the last time I had a splash fight while skinny dipping with another man too.

Makoto is probably the worst offender in my book, where as Nagisa I'm giving a pass because I think he's got identity issues xD

Gotcha. I can agree, I just personally interpreted it all as intentional fujoshi bait that didn't really mean anything.

Is there something wrong with a man acting something that is typically 'female'? I thought we were all for breaking gender expectations/roles? or is it only acceptable when women start to act like men?

Edit:
-cutting this out cause i read it wrong-

And no one cares if CR doesn't want fanservice.
There is an audience for it, just as there is an audience for anything else.
UtaPri is filled with fanservice for women and it recently sold over 54k copies for its first volume.
Clearly, they don't care about it.

And until there is dick sucking and dick in butt it isn't gay.
Until they confess their feelings for eachother, it isn't gay.
Just guys being a bit friendly with eachother.

I think he was just calling it how he saw it; he wasn't criticizing.

I'm still not seeing like why it matters if they act like girls?
I dunno, they act like guys in animes to me?

Every character resembles an aquatic animal.
Haruka is a dolphin,
Shark teeth Rin is a shark,
And Nagisa has penguins on his boxers.

Now try to figure out the rest.

You're greatly misinterpreting my post.

Overall, I enjoyed it, and I even admitted that I will continue watching it. That's not out of spite or some kind of moral obligation, I liked the episode. Even further, I stated that I have the utmost of faith in KyoAni not to mess it up to some silly weakness.

I was just pointing out a potential for weakness moving forward based on a factor that tends to be considered a weakness in most anime today, just with the opposite gender.

They can act as girly as they want, it doesn't bother me, I was just pointing out that they act girly at all and that a lot of Makoto and Nagisa's mannerisms could be interpreted as feminine. I mean, I don't think you can even really argue that.

I understand you're attempting to make an appearance on some gender equality podium here but it's not needed...I'm not being sexist.

I'll go by the fact that he's gigantic and say Makoto is a whale.

Makoto is the killer whale

while Rei has a butterfly on his shirt? o.O i guess it's because he can swim the butterfly...

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT KYOANUS.
Look at her design, she is beautiful. The teacher lady too.
You finally get the female character design right.
You finally stray from your typical buckteeth moeblob design.
And what you do?
You place them in a show where you're obviously pandering to fujoshi
FUCK

Also wut?

^ No kidding. Best female character designs since Zetman imho; better than, even (acknowledging personal bias).
