I want to like this but to be honest it's just barely skating along at "OK." I feel like I'm the only one who finds the story boring. (I do like slice of life--Kimi to Boku is one of my favorites; and I do like sports anime, so I'm not sure why.)

Some good news about High Speed!
It ranked at Oricon this week! It's the first of any KyoAni light novels to do that!
We also don't have the total of what it sold because the KyoAni store doesn't report to Oricon and neither does one other store where High Speed is currently ranked #3.

I was a little late in getting this here.
haha.
Sorry about that.

See the news here
(It's in the top ten! #9, but still good!)

See the place it's ranked at here
(This is the store that doesn't report book sales to Oricon, so don't know how many copies were sold here.)

In a couple days they'll post another sales thread, if it ranks again I'll be sure to share it here.

Brushing aside the superficial stuff (of which I don't want to explain) is the story bland in a sense? From what I have read and inferred from other posts is that they are liking Free! because of it's comedic actions, Gou, and character interactions.

I am trying to use good diction. I don't want to offend anyone because this anime is a bit on the touchy side.

New Spoond 2Di cover.
They're all so cute!

And Free!'s OP ranked at Oricon today.

*6, 15,487 *15,487 Free! OP "Rage on"

See here

Things are looking good so far.
The DVD/BD doesn't release till Sept 11 though, so won't know anything like that for a while, but the novel and OP have done good.
The ED will be out in August.

Essentially, it's about the rivalry between a seemingly self-centered swimming prodigy (Haruka) and his distant childhood best friend (Rin) who naturally developed an inferiority complex about the whole thing, since he was always worse than the MC. After returning from training in Australia for a few years, Rin has become a better swimmer, at the cost of becoming a douchebag. So begins the rivalry. The main problem being that neither of the key characters fully understand the power of friendship. It's a pretty okay story.

If you wanted to make it sound awesome, it's like Akira, but with swimming

I can't put my finger on it. Yes the story feels bland, but I don't know why. There is a fair amount of comedy--and I do find those comic things funny; and I do find Kou refreshing as a female character, though in real life I'd find her a little annoying (less annoying than most anime girls though). I think maybe something's missing in regard to character development (though there's time for that in later episodes) and relationship-building. I feel like they are trying hard at the latter (in fact that seems to be what the story is about--especially in terms of Haruka's relationship with Rin, but that I'm being "told" it--I don't "feel" it.

Maybe because there's no sense of uncertainty/suspense? There's no real feeling that we're waiting for something to be revealed, it's all laid out rather obviously. There's usually a sort of looking forward and wondering what the next episode will bring, whereas here it's more like we know what the next ten episodes will bring before they happen.

There just aren't many layers to anything, I guess is what I'm getting at.

If you don't enjoy ogling cartoons because you're actually a decent human being, you probably won't enjoy this.

And I hated Highschool of the Dead, so fuck you.
