I remember being young and happened to turn the channel to Toonami right when the opening of Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex; it sucked me in and I watched the whole episode. After that I would stay up late just to watch that show.

I lived in Asia until 8 years old. Sailor Moon was a big thing in Asia back then, I was watching it since 4 in my language.
Then I came to Australia and that was the time that Pokemon came out and it was another big obsession for me and kids around my age at the time.

When I entered high school, my anime obsession started dying down and it was non-existent at one point. But when I was 15, I saw Spirited Away by chance one night on TV, and... I was totally taken away by it. That's how I became an anime watcher 'till this day.

I watched the Dragon Ball series years ago, which got me a bit interested. Then, I saw Durarara and that got me to watch another anime(can't remember which). I stopped watching anime for a bit over a year after watching that other anime because I didn't really enjoy it. After going that long period of time without watching anime, I saw Angel Beats and I started watching anime again.

I realized that I had no life ahead of me... the horrors of having a life, including raising children, left me disillusioned.

Hollywood subliminally held a gun in my face while stabbing my intellect (or lack thereof) in the back with the knife of crappy movies, insipid plots, overpriced tickets, long lines for 1 night avant garde so-so shows. Much as I like cinema (tip o' the hat to Criterion Collection and a few other haute culture affairs) and the arts I found as i got older my tastes changed. Anime for me was an extension of the Japanese influence of Toho-produced Godzilla. I saw the Americanized version Godzilla, King of the Monsters as a kid in NYC in 1956. Cool show, scared the crap outta me. Fast forward at least 4 decades later I'm channel surfing on cable because, as usual, there's not a shittin' thing to watch when Bingo! here's a cartoony teen Japanese kid being chased by a gal pirate named Ryoko as well as a Princess Ayeka while living with his relatives in a scrumptous architectural setting out in the country. Corny but funny, and different. What the heck, watch a show or two. There's nothing else going on worth watching.

Been hooked ever since.
