I have no clue. I thought about this the other day, and couldn't remember how anime got my attention, especially since it's so unpopular in the US.

I always liked Americanized cartoons, but when I saw Wicked City, back when it was still considered Japanese Animation, I was hooked from then on. From there it was, Macross/ Robotech, Mobile Suit Gundam, Guyver, Tekkaman Blade, Detinator Orgun...so on and so forth. There used to be a channel on UHF that would broadcast Japanese Animation, that if I watched in a particular room in the house, would come in clearly. Man, you kids have no idea how good you have it. I mean I used to watch it all on a black and white tv. ah the stone ages of anime...such good times.

one thing I didn't realize earlier that Voltron, which is the Americanized form of Go Lion, would probably have been my first, but it was Wicked City, that which hooked me in.

Well when I was young I watched all of the greats and more..
All the Dragon Balls, Sailor Moon, POKE`MON, Digimon, Trigun, Kenshin, HAMTARO!!!, Code Lyoko, COwboy Bebop, etc....
BUT
what really got me into anime was:
CASE CLOSED
Case closed was the absolute best!!! Made me feel like I was a real detective! Scooby Doo and all that other crap had NOTHING on Case Closed!

When I was 7 and was visiting my biological father, I discovered Toonami and Midnight Run in 1999. For years, I was only able to watch anime during those trips, because my mom only had cable throughout most of my childhood. Amazingly, I didn't associate anime with Japan until 2003-2004, when I visited an uncle and his recently married Japanese wife and her daughter. My new cousin allowed me to watch Spirited Away, which had no English subtitles or dub. It's funny, because I understood what was going on and somehow new the gist of what the characters were saying from about 1/4 into it. It wasn't until a few years ago that I finally saw the movie in English, and I was amazed about how much I understood; however, that was the one and only time that I ever tried watching the Japanese version of an anime without subtitles. During the visit when I watched Spirited Away, I was also introduced to manga. My cousin's manga was all in Japanese, though, so I was only able to go by the pictures. Something didn't seem right when I was thumbing through, but I later realized why. Apparently, she didn't tell me that I was supposed to read them from right-to-left, which I found out when I started reading manga on my own in 2006.
Outlaw Star, Sailor Moon, and DBZ are what first drew me into anime. At the time, I didn't know that they were Japanese. All I knew was that I loved the art and thought that they were awesome. They were also the first cartoons that I watched that were particularly violent, and Outlaw Star also has the honor of being the first seinen anime that I've seen.

What caught me was how different it was from american cartoons. I loved it. As a kid I was watching Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, DBZ, all the good stuff. Early 2000's I started watching all sorts of anime.

I think it was "Warriors of the Wind" I watched in 1986 on some weird channel when I was 11. Searched for years afterward, finding the "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" as its more authentic version.

When I was a kid. My sister made me and my bro watch Sailor Moon with her.on tv on weekdays. I had no idea it was mainly for female audience, but I enjoyed it.>< lol..Anyway. The main deal was:Right after Sailor Moon went off-Dragon Ball Z would come on next(and that's when my sister would leave the living room). On the weekends:Pokemon would show too. And I pretty much enjoyed anime since then.

So like many. DBZ nailed me into anime. But I will also credit Sailor Moon,Shaman King, and Yugioh.
