To any of you who have been there:

Was it worth the trip, and what's the best part?
Also.. are there a good amount of anime related stores? And how epic are those UFO catchers? x3

If you like the anime or video game part of Japanese culture and want to come as close as possible to overloading your senses with it, I'd say it's worth setting aside some time on your trip to go there. I spent about a half day there on each of my past two trips to Japan in 2007 and 2010. It was fun. Yes, tons of anime-related stores, as you might expect-- books, DVDs, figures, cosplay items, all manner of other trinkets (and some expensive stuff too). Maid cafes (and variations thereof) too. I didn't play any of the UFO catcher games or capsule toy dispensers myself, but they're there too.

Is it true that u can also get hot food items like Pizza from the vending machines there? I thought I remember reading that u can get almost anything out of a vending machine in Japan.

I have to say I don't remember that-- pizza from vending machines-- but, I wasn't particularly looking out for it either. Somehow, it wouldn't surprise me at all if one could get that over there! I don't remember where I ate in Akihabara in 2007, but in 2010, I ate at the @home maid cafe (a cool salad with bacon bits, and a fairly good-sized ice cream parfait really hit the spot on a sweaty June day). My Japanese, while still basic now, was extremely basic at that time, but one of the maids there, "my" maid as it were, was an English literature major, and so she was a bit above average at actually conversing in English, and so it was a good time. I spent two hours there! It was actually a relief to find someone with whom I could speak English. I remember her asking whether maid cafes existed in America, and I replied that I wish they did, but highly doubted that they would-- at least in the manner they operate in Japan and Akihabara in particular!

You should try Nakano Broadway if you're in Tokyo too. Between the two, you can easily spend two or even three days just shopping and looking around.

Oh, but the best part? Rare finds, great selection, used goods in mint condition, and not having to pay international shipping every frickin' time (... all that, and the Crazy Crepe). Some of these places don't have online stores either, making it impossible to buy their stock of used, five years since release, mint condition, limited edition stuff from anywhere else.

... Didn't see pizza from vending machines, though. I've seen full-fledged noodle bowls though... spiked with salt as can be imagined. What was the place? Vend cafe Sandoria? I don't know if it's still around anymore, but there was a small building with all varieties of ramen, udon, and beverages all from vending machines where you could collect together the parts which made a meal.

I went to Akihabara when I visited Japan a couple of times but I barely had time to actually explore every aspect of the town. Their was a lot of anime stores their. I went to the biggest anime store they had and it was about 30-50 stories high and each floor filled with anything you can imagine I guess. It's definitely worth the trip but you should also visit other places like Mt Fuji, Osaka, and Kyoto. And yeah Akihabara is expensive but luckily my relatives gave me a lot of money to spend lol.

Akihabara is a pretty awesome place, however I don't go there very often despite living 4 stations away. The only reason why I would go to Akihabara is to take a friend, go to anime events, buy a book that I really wanted, or go to super potato (スーパーポテト).

if you are a gamer, super potato will help overdose your nostalgia and sate it at the same time, over 5 floors filled with games since the family system (system before nintendo). They also have game machines there. But if you went there just to play games, I would suggest going to one of the many sega buildings there.

By the way, if you want to play that gundam immersion game (pod game) don't stay in tokyo to play... almost 500 yen a play at taito game floor in baba, can't imagine the price in Akihabara. If you think you'll be playing the game for a long time, go to Kahin-Makuhari. The mall there has a game floor with those same pods, except they cost 300 yen a play.

Anyways, I think I'll do an Akihabara video soon. Check out my youtube videos YT: Rockman9000ijou
I haven't uploaded any recent videos, but keep a watch out for more.

Mr. Donut is also everywhere. I don't know if there's any special store menu at that particular Mr. Donut, though. Some stores do that, don't know if Mr. Donut is one of them.

I know someone who likes the Star Kebob there (not a bad place, either), and I'm a fan of the Crazy Crepe. I usually try to go there at least once. Too bad there's no Hokka Hokka Tei in Akiba...

I only been there once and the time I was there I dropped almost 15,000 yen and that was only in 2 hours. I didn't even really buy anything. Mainly cards and a few figures. Best part is probably the selection of anime as usual. Book ace near my place can't touch Akihabara. Plus they have all the card game tournaments and is always in stock of rare cards. Grr I wanna go! Maybe next payday

Cool you're in Japan since you don't feel the need to stock up, but if you go there on vacation and realize you forgot to plan time in your trip to shop... that number can triple. Don't know if I quadrupled it (or worse), but I probably came close since I did most my shopping literally hours before my flight left. Mad shopping dash, GOOOOOOO!!!! \(^o^)/
