I know I'm about to make a sacrilegious statement, but I never found Shinji annoying. In addition to never having anyone care about him since he was 4 years old he also has to pilot a giant mech in a big war against monstrous invaders that are coming to destroy the world. His perceived whineness has to do with how emotionally stunted he was as a child with his mother dying and his father abandoning him. On top of that he's a great deconstruction of the typical hot-blooded mech pilot, showing going through such circumstances is unlikely to lead to a more mentally stable individual.

On the other hand I found Yukiteru to be someone I got quite angry at over time. At first he's not so bad. The typical kid who never really made friends with anyone during his adolescence. When introduced into the survival game, he is initially wary of the psycho yandere Yuno, but since she's a much more competent fighter than him he works together with her.
At the end of the day I didn't find him annoying so much as I hated him and I could have absolutely no sympathy for him by the end.

I'm not the only one who feels exactly this way? *tears of joy* Preach on, brother.

Edit: actually, I agree with your post about Yuki as well. This is such a nice feeling lol

I've yet to count how many posts had shinji on it nor will i bother, but this thread should prove your point

Spinelessness is not annoying, uselessness is a bit more annoying. Shinji's weakness served as a purpose to the story, therefore it was justified. Amano's weakness was more intrusive and less relevant to the plot to the point where you question why he was even picked by god when there was nothing special to him, the only time he grew balls was when he realized there were no longer any consequences. That's it, but other than that, Shinji's cowardice is integral to the development, Amano's cowardice was a bit more misplaced and not very well developed, it was more of an excuse to put a weakness in rather than acting as a central part of the story. "This character has no internal conflict, make him weak" Vs "Overcoming weakness is the goal of the show's morality"

Code Geass went down the tubes in season 2.

I liked it better when he was a guerilla and everybody and their grandmothers didn't have a geass.

Hell in that anime I wouldn't be surprised if random Takoyaki vendors all possessed a geass as well lol.

You're like, my new favorite member.

I can't be the only one who was thinking this.

I agree with you as well. Shinji is quite possibly the most realistic representation of a person in what is an extremely insane situation. People in general don't like to be reminded of how fragile we are emotionally. Which is probably where all the hate for Shinji comes from.

I found Arita Haruyuki(Accel world) the most annoying. It surprises me how big of a gap between awesome and annoying Kaji yuki can have. He voices both Haruyuki and Eren Jaeger, and i despise one of them and love the other.

Seems like im helping contribute into making this a "most annoying character" topic instead of what you originally planned.

It's weird, I liked Shinji for the first half of Neon Genesis Evangelion and disliked Yukiteru for the first half of Mirai Nikki. Then I disliked Shinji for the rest of Evangelion and liked Yuki for the rest of Mirai Nikki. So I must say Yuki annoyed me less lol.

Shinji has some cool moments like when he saves Rei in Eva 2.22 whereas Amano is a total wanker..
