don't think those 2 are actually albino in i believe it was more like accelerators (he reflected all the UV rays that cause hair pigmentation ) case for those 2 seeing as they both live in space if the ships didn't block UV radiation u'd be dead pretty quickly so it does and then when raised in that environment there is no stimulus for the hair to change color

, that makes sense , its different in space , then all hair colors probably have a reason , i personally like the different hair colors used in anime , the ones that ive watched .

i think it's just a misconception on their part.

moka or moca(don't know how to spell her name)

Moka's a vampire...she's supposed to have long, flowing silver hair and red eyes.

But i always found Shiro with these traits

I just see at as the art style. there are characters with abnormal hair color and even skin colors and because it is anime it works. I don't think its a jab or an attempt at awareness. Unless it is stated in the show that the character is albino I wouldn't interpret it as such.

That... also there's an habit of using pseudo-albino traits to identify an human who has something artificial to him/her. And others are probably just following the trend.

Exhibit #1:

Exhibit #2:

Exhibit #3:

I see a trend .

First let me qualify by saying that I actually do have albinism. Except I'm black so its actually FAR more noticeable with me.

I personally don't think that the majority of "pale characters with white hair" actually have albinism. If they truly did, then you should look for three traits.

1). High sensitivity to sunlight
2). Red eyes or a lighter color like blue or green
3). Extremely bad eyesight

It's the conspicuous lack of #3 which leads me to believe that these characters don't actually have albinism, but are rather just pale guys with light hair. I have to use a monocular to see a whiteboard that's less than 10 feet in front of me . . . lol

However, even if these characters don't have albinism, I still sort of connect with them. It makes me happy to see that in eastern culture, pale skin and light hair aren't portrayed in the media as the marks of a freak or some sort of weird monk / assassin lol

[Edit: but after reading some of these posts, it does make me a little sad to see that albinic traits are associated with inhuman characteristics . . Only a little, though.]

Some characters are special so they are just whiter than others. For example, vampires, the girls for Fate/Zero (I'd say why but that would be a spoiler). For those "normal characters" that seem albino, I think part of it is that many anime comes from manga and light novels, which dont add color to people (unless their really dark). Color doesnt always translate correctly from manga to anime. The most famous example is in DBZ, SSJ is white hair, but the anime changed it to yellow (the reason it was white was so the creator and his assistant didnt have to color their hair in). Also, it would look weird if every character had the same skin color, some making some more noticeably whiter than others would help a lot. At least thats what I think.

Although there's only one person on the list who "officially" has albinism according to the manga.

This trope is much more popular in Japan, where skin is ideally as light as possible, than in the west.

It's kind of fascinating to me that albinism in western fiction is often a mark of "being different is evil" when in a culture like Japan, which we think of as being incredibly insular, it's practically the exact opposite. Even moreso when I'm pretty sure Japan associates the color white with death (I could be mistaken or oversimplifying, though).

It also doesn't surprise me that they ignore the negative effects of albinism; especially in shounen-type series.

Edit:

I wonder though, if there was a medical condition that gave people blue hair, if we'd be having this same conversation.

Or one that associated pink hair with large breasts and being a cute but manipulative dandere, for that matter.
