Recorder and Randsell is one of the most hilarious animes I've watched.
Senyuu too.
You shouldn't skip shows just becaus they don't have 25 minute episodes.

Absurd plot developments or character abilities that have no explanation.

This!!! Yama no Susume (Encouragement of Climb) is proof you can do a great show in under 5 minutes. Teekyuu, Wooser, Mangirl!, Chitose Get You, Poyopoyo, Aiura, all good examples of great shorts.

I guess I'll drop any show that isn't intriguing enough from the start. If a show tends to differ too much from the manga without actually being better than the manga I'll drop it as well. For example: Naruto Shippuden.

Gimmicks that don't work, like that bird from Tamako Market.

Inconsistencies or plot changes that are unwarranted *cough* Valvrave *cough*.

Unwarranted drama. Sorry to sound like a broken record on this part. I won't elaborate.

Aesthetics that are basically bad... Majestic Prince suffers from this, starting with the character designs, going all the way to any background that isn't in space. Everything about Majestic Prince looks very ascetic and pale. Perhaps that's intentional, but still. Date A Live also has non-standard aesthetics in what is, at the core, a very standard and cliched action harem. Things like unexpectedly realistic lighting coupled with conspicuous 3D make the whole show weird to look at. I do love the character designs in it, though.

Two of the three mech shows this season are not that great, and the only one that is great isn't even about the robot ;_; such a shame

Which is the reason why I haven't managed to watch more than 1 episode and 5 mins of ep 2.

Shinji Matou?

You enjoyed that didn't you.

Eh, I feel like it punches me in the "suspending disbelief" part of my brain. I just care so much less if I don't think the drama is appropriate. I was talking about this in the 2012 Battle thread about Sakurasou. When everything that could go wrong just kept going wrong around episode 19 or so, I nearly dropped the show because I thought the developments were too contrived.

Strangely, I'm much more receptive to drama in the context of an unrealistic setting, like in a shounen fantasy. Even if the lessons it conveys are the same as any given slice-of-life, the drama is much easier to pull off than when it's already in a realistic setting. Sakurasou just came off as pessimistic.

The problem is that Sakurasou only got 6/10 novels through the story! If you turned off many dramas halfway through they would be pessimistic too! We don't get to the redemption parts of the story in season one... which is unfortunate. If they had animated to the end of the books it would be different, you'd have a different view of it (note, book 10 is not out quite yet so I am making assumptions but books 8 and 9 are already quite redemptive).

Pessimistic maybe, but I viewed it as a healthy dose of reality. Just because you have a dream and you have desire to fulfill it does not mean life will just roll over for you and give you a happily ever after. I like how that played out in Sakurasou, obviously I want to see redemption for life shitting all over Nanami and Sorata but as hpulley said we aren't there yet.

I am equal opportunity and think we need more love in this world of all kinds so yuri, yaoi, shonen ai, shoujo ai, all good... the more complicated the relationship diagrams needed to explain the show the better!

Sakurasou novel spoilers... major plot items included so if you want to wait (possibly forever) for season 2, then don't read...

That's fair, but I'm certain that drama shows just aren't my thing lol. I just keep getting sucked into them for how well-reviewed they are.I couldn't even watch past 5 episodes of Downton Abbey, because I could sense all the stupid betrayal and miscommunications and gossip coming from a mile away. I'm definitely watching more of Sakurasou if a new season comes out, though. I've come too far to stop now.
