Things that turn you off to an anime (before or during a series)

1. Overuse of fanservice- I don't mind the occasional fanservice, even if it is of girls. But when theres a constant jiggling of tits on the screen every 2 minutes and it's not labeled ecchi, then I usually drop it because it's obvious the animation group is abusing that one factor to keep it's audience.
2. Anime with episodes over 60 episodes- 60 episodes is already too much for me, but more than that and I usually don't watch the anime.
3. Anime with a badly done harem- for example, a wimpy male character who's boring but yet scores all the chicks and uninteresting women, with the only good part of them being their looks.

No, but seriously. Male MC's w/ girly voices turn me off.
I wouldn't automatically drop them but I would have a hard time watching.

How exactly do you define "trying too hard" to be cool? At what point does an anime stop just being cool and essentially begins to "try too hard"? It's either cool or it isn't, if you're giving something enough credit to say it's trying to be cool it probably already is cool. Cool is a vague word all on its own though, to boot.

GayAsianBoyPointless speech/dialogue such as:
"I really like this sandwich" or "That octopus in that bento looks so good". It's pointless and doesn't help anything in the story.

It's actually great that you mention this as it helped me to remember a really important one that goes on my list. I absolutely abhor what I have coined as being called "Brock-isms".

Can you maybe guess what these are? It's when characters go to way too much effort to explain something that has just taken place on screen, in an effort to lay it out plainly for those who either have horrible attention spans or can't logically conclude what happened for themselves, or even worse, the anime purposely did something extremely vague and was forced to have the dialogue be there to save it.

"Woah! Mudkip took a lot of damage from that Razor leaf because of its weakness to grass attacks!"

Yeah, typical Brock-ism. Obviously in other shows you minus the Pokemon and you get things like this...

"I can't believe it! He pulled strength from his lower body in order to block the attack so that the enemy would get confused by his attack not connecting and leave himself vulnerable!"

Good god I can't freaking stand this stuff when it happens. It kills the scene for me. It kills the anime. I just can't take it when an anime has a Brock or uses Brock-isms ad-nausea.

TrueGooberGimmicks that don't work, like that bird from Tamako Market.

Aw, to each their own. I loved Tamako Market, Dera included.

There seems to be some winning honorable mention re-occuring (aside from things bad plot or characters, or poor animation which are obvious turn offs to anyone with viewer integrity) here which is the "too much fan service/ecci/lolicon/moe".

I think that's interesting because each of those things exist in and of themselves purely to please the viewer. I'm sure it works on some people out there, but it's interesting to see how many have higher standards than that (as animes that over-use these things tend to barter out other more important elements of the show in exchange for having them like good story, characters & etc).

Imho, when they're too pretentious for the contents of their own series and break the audience's immersion.

It's basically a flippant shounen acting like it's hard seinen and ultimately being a laughingstock, or a character who mistakes angst for an adult-like charisma befitting a tragically suffering lead character who's actually a stuffed buffoon.

Whether or not this is a fault in any specific example will vary from person to person, though.

Example:

You didn't "fix" anything.
And while we're on the subject, doesn't Psycho-Pass fit the category of try hard
more so than Guilty Crown and Code Geass?

In the end, most people think Code Geass > Your fave anyway
so I will stop being bothered.

EDIT:

I love hating on Code Geass.

I'm even working on finishing it just so I can hate on it with more authority (12 episodes left). Other people can like it though, that doesn't bother me. I think Psycho-Pass handled itself well, but like I said, it'll depend on the viewer.

The end better be worth it though, I've heard its one of the best endings in anime.

But that said, I'm glad it exists since it was the prototype for Valvrave the Liberator, which is pretty enjoyable.

You would choose an anime of lesser caliber.
Not surprised.

Code Geass ending > Psycho-Pass as a whole.
Bye.

If there's way too much dialogue and if the story doesn't movie forward. I usually turn it off if there's too much ecchi in it too.. I don't know but the story must be really good for me to watch harem.

Anime with less than 50 episodes. It's just my personal preference. I like longer series.

I really hate seeing fanservice, fillers, and anime that overtakes the manga. (The 2003 version of Fullmetal Alchemist is one which overtook the manga. So there were a number of differences between the 2003 anime and the manga.)

1. Helpless girls who get in the way of the main character.
2. Girls with epically high pitched and breathy voices
3. Weird hairstyles (I hate it when there's a giant cowlick on the top of a character's head)
4. Brazen female characters nagging at overly-quiet and weak male characters
