No, but seriously. Male MC's w/ girly voices turn me off.
I wouldn't automatically drop them but I would have a hard time watching.

How exactly do you define "trying too hard" to be cool? At what point does an anime stop just being cool and essentially begins to "try too hard"? It's either cool or it isn't, if you're giving something enough credit to say it's trying to be cool it probably already is cool. Cool is a vague word all on its own though, to boot.

1. 100+ episodes. The only exception would be Gintama. Anything over 25 is way too much for me, with the exception of Natsume, that show could go up to 1000 and I wouldn't get tired of it.

2. Characters in weird, dramatic poses.

3. Overuse of silly facial expressions [ex. Skip Beat]

4. Girls being too violent for the purpose of comedy. No it's not okay to hit your guy friend/brother over and over again for petty reasons.

5. Too much oversized boobs and especially when they jump spontaneously, haha it's weird, I know it's anime, but jumping boobs is not healthy. And all I can think about is back pain.

Hmm, I guess the only thing for me is if the story is to slow. If I watch more than 5 episodes and can't be hooked, than it might not be a series worth watching. Oh, and too much ecchi can be a killer for me, unless it does it well. . . like Eiken. . .

Fanservice has wrecked the experience for a bunch of anime for me. Some anime were so good I felt there was absolutely no need for it. Shuffle is probably the most obvious one for me. I thought Rosario Vampire was cute enough as well. The story was kind of so-so, but I think it was still enough to not have to resort to upskirt and boobs shots every other minute.

Also the "spineless protagonist" angle is getting really old. Give the poor guy a pair already. A dash of integrity would also help.

1. Excessive fan service in what would be a really great plot!
2. Spinless male leads or cry baby female leads )
3. 1 Fight that takes more than 2 episodes/Shows that didn't know when to quit and are on episode 200+
4. When there is a big misunderstanding over something so stupid and would have been cleared up with just the slightest communication
5.When the friend becomes the enemy because of jealousy

Good mentions.

I also do not like when a female lead character gets away with being way too flippantly violent with a supporting lead male character (or *the* main character). After the 100th time it gets annoying, especially if it's over pretentious things like...when anime girls walk in on the guys taking a bath then slap the guys? Why does this happen?

Also...I could not finish Maoyu because of the lead chick. Her boobs were just too big, and it literally killed both the character, and the anime for me.

There is a huge number of things that could potentially turn me off to a series, especially when combined. Some of these include:

- Overly bizarre or (to me) unfitting animation style.

- Extremely 'plain' modern (computer drawn) animation, which accounts for about 60% or so of modern anime...

- Excessively tragic drama (tragedy on tragedy on tragedy). It's just plain boring; some tasteful moderation please.

- Highly unfitting comic elements thrown, seemingly without thought, into moments of built-up tension and drama.

- Any anime with episodes spanning less than 10 minutes in length!

- Poorly presented/envisioned character lineup that you don't feel anything for (even negative feelings are better than no feelings).

- Overly feminine male characters, or ridiculously 'beautified' characters of any gender.

- Annoyingly loud-mouthed kids. Especially that archetypically cocky shonen boy with his irritating voice that seems to sound eerily similar regardless of what voice-actor is portraying it...

- Large amounts of 'fanservice', especially in series where it's just not fitting. Again, some moderation please.

- Any anime that is, at all plot levels, completely devoid a 'grey-zone'. I really dislike when everything is just black and white, so to speak.

- Any anime that ceaselessly shoves 'morality cakes' down your throat, makes me want to crawl out of my skin...

- Oh, and definitely agreeing to the below quote:

Animation is a big thing for me. OP, I saw you mentioned Clannad, that is exactly my case as well. While I probably will finish the show some day just so I can say I did and the fact that the show's so talked about, I'm not a fan of the art direction at all. It's a turn-off.

2. Spineless male leads or cry baby female leads. (female leads not so much, but then again I'm male)
4. When there is a big misunderstanding over something so stupid and would have been cleared up with the slightest communication.

School Days. I'm so pissed. I stopped at episode 4 because I saw that the anime had such a crazy bad ending. I wasted my time starting to watch it. Why bother with such useless love triangle?

Animation Style is a HUGE thing with me. If it doesn't have decent animation more than likely I'm just not going to check it out.

Episode length is another thing for me. I would have to say that 30 episodes is my limit, animes over that tend to drag. I prefer shorter series cause they seem to have better pacing, though too short is also a problem as well.

I am a little turned off by ecchi/overt fanservice. Too much of it takes away from the story and characters in my opinion. I feel the only anime to ever do ecchi/reverse harem correctly was Bakemonogatari. It had a plot, it still developed its characters even with its fan service.

-When I'm anticipating a show that I was told/have heard is good, but it turns out to be seriously disappointing. I mean, it's really annoying if you're expecting something unique like people have said a show is, but you can see what's going to happen long before it does and there is an over abundance of cliches.

-Fanservice that isn't done right. When you expect a show to be filled with boob and panty shots, it's not always so bad, but when they come out of nowhere and serve no purpose to the plot, then it's frustrating. I've come across series that I wasn't expecting to have any fanservice, and yet here's all this much more subtle, annoying fanservice that totally takes away from the show. I am of the opinion that with fanservice you either go all the way, or not at all.

-I have so little motivation to watch longer shows simply because of their length. I don't have the time to get invested in them, and I feel like if I try to take on longer shows I'll have to finish them (or watch all the episodes that are out), but then I'll ignore other shows because I just want to finish the long running one. Plus, long runners tend to have a lot of filler episodes, which are freaking annoying and another turn off for me.

-Incredibly dense characters. Honestly, if it takes half the show for them to realize what has already been revealed to the audience, then it makes the show boring and annoying.

-Plot twists for the sake of plot twists. When every episode or almost every episode has some sort of plot twist that makes the story incredibly convoluted, I get confused and am tempted to drop the show right there. I only like shows that have a lot of tragedy when they're done right.

-Rushed endings. You know, those endings that are so stupid and you can tell the creators were all, "oh crap, we have to write an ending now... um, this should work, yeah." Especially if the show itself was really good, a rushed ending is a big let down. I don't mind endings that are a complete surprise and are totally unexpected, and I actually kind of prefer them so long as they're not absurd, but rushed endings kill my opinion of an anime.

-Characters and story are most important to me, but if the artwork/animation is that atrocious, then it's a major turn off and is often distracting. The other side of the coin is when you have amazing animation, but a crappy story and pathetic characters, which is just as bad. And when all 3 are bad then you just have a craptastic show.
