So Aniplex USA just put out the prices and release dates for the Sword Art Online DVD and Bluray sets, and lately I've been seeing a lot of outrage from the price and people raging about why they cost so much, especially the Bluray ($90).

Aniplex USA release their series similar to the releases sold in Japan, with special edition and bonus features that aren't really found in modern American releases. Usually when you buy a series these days, all you get is a plain cover that you could probably find on Google Images and just put together with Paint, and the discs.
These sets though come with many special features that collectors and die hard fans would be really pleased about. The only difference between the American release and the Japanese releases is that the American releases don't come with the light novel bonuses
(LIKE THIS)

The sets do come with commentary from the Japanese cast and creators, pin ups, a CD soundtrack, cover art by the Light Novel Illustrator, and animated shorts called Sword Art Offline never shown on TV. Which can be found at the link below

Sword Art Online is a series I've really come to love, and tbh I do find the series to be kind of bad compared to other series for a lot of points, but I've just gotten attached to the characters and series either way. I do enjoy the light novels more however compared to the anime.
The series costs about a wopping $90. The price isn't determined by the episode numbers, but by the special features.
(If you cringe at the price of this set, wait till you see the Bluray sets for Fate/Zero and Gurren Lagann (from $300-600).
I've already spent so much money on Sword Art Online, that you wouldn't believe and I find this to be a very reasonable price, but I can also see why people wouldn't want to buy it.
Would you guys find this worth buying?

Not interested in SAO, but I know when Kara no Kyoukai came over in BD it was $400-500 and sold out instantly.

I'd expect Fate/Zero and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann to do the same.

I have yet to see a season of an anime I personally think would be worth more than $60 or so to own, but that just means I'm not the target demographic (I also don't really care about any particular special features or bonus items).

And each person who's willing to pay $90 (which is pretty reasonable) fills in for three people who'd pay $30.

Jack that up to $400-500 and you're looking at one person paying for 15.

Probably slightly more, since there'd be less costs on the production and distribution end as well.

Just to clarify, it isn't $90 for the entire series. The entire series is roughly $360. $90 buys you one of the four box sets, which have 7 episodes each.

I believe that it's going to vary from mod to mod what they would thing is the right course of action for this thread. (Keep it its own thread vs put it in the SAO discussion thread)

As it seems less about SAO in general, and more about the packaging of product / distribution in the US, it seems like it could lead to a broader discussion so I'm going to leave it as its own thread!

Thanks guys!

sounds about the same as prices pre-crash. DVDs with 3-4 episodes and nothing else would cost $30 MSRP. prices nowadays are ridiculously low by comparison, yet get the same amount of stuff. I had no problem paying the price for quality shows, but I don't think I'd be buying those SAO BDs.

Yes it is more than worth buying. As a fan of the show, no price is to high for my SAO addiction.

I have just recently started researching prices of Blu ray anime as I love collecting shows that I like. Although I have to agree that $300+ for an entire set is a bit outrageous, it is entirely up to the consumers to determine what its worth.

For Example, how does a Coach bag can cost $500+ and who in their right mind would pay for a bag that expensive? Well there are definitely people that will fork out money for it because they believe you pay for what you get and it's worth every penny. Same can be said about Anime.

I recently spent $600 on the entire series of Fate Zero and I really have no regret doing it or have felt like I was ripped off. I love the Anime and it has become on top of my list for one of the best of all time. The production value is high as it comes with special features as well as some original box artwork that you can't find anywhere else.

I do like SAO but I am not in love with it like some others will so I do not see myself spending that much for the entire series. But for those that are die hard fans, I say save your money and just do it.

$90 buys you one of the four box sets, which have 7 episodes each.

7 Episodes * 4 Box sets = 28 episodes.
Sword Art Online: 25 Episodes.

lolderp

And all joking aside, I'll assume that there are 3 sets with only 6 episodes and one with 7 (Although that wouldn't make sense based on where it would leave off). Also, $360 is a pretty steep price for a single season. Who does Aniplex think they're selling to anyways?

Haha I figured someone would get specific on me. If you want to see the details of them all, set 1, set 2, set 3, and set 4.
