If a man has no beliefs - meaning that he is uncertain - why should he do anything? How should he live his life?

Without beliefs or goals can one live or just exist? To me the man without beliefs can only exist and therefor not live, so to answer your question, it is not possible for him to live a life without beliefs

Ohh sure, Join a military organization where you learn to kill your fellow man, where they say " This is my rifle, this is my gun, this is for killing, this is for fun "

Well not really the Marines teach a man to take control of their lives. Only someone who can't really understand/ has no experience of working with military organizations would say that it's all about killing. In the Marines one would learn;

Honor "A code of personal integrity, honor guides those who do the right thing when no one is looking. It is not only a duty, but also a distinction, as those who possess honor are held in honor. It's found in one's beliefs, but exhibited through one's actions. Marines are held to the highest of standards, ethically and morally. Marines are expected to act responsibly in a manner befitting the title they've earned."

Courgae "When other principles are tested, it's courage that prevents them from crumbling. It isn't ignoring fear, but being stronger than fear. Courage is the guardian of all other values. It is there when times are toughest, when difficult decisions have to be made. It takes the form of mental, physical and ethical strength, and is found in the backbone of every Marine."

Commitment "Commitment is the spirit of determination found in every Marine. It is what compels Marines to serve our nation and the Corps, and to continue on when others quit. Commitment doesn't take breaks and it cannot be faked. It measures and proves one's desire, dedication and faithfulness. Becoming a United States Marine represents the highest level of commitment."

Ductus Exemplo " Marines put honor, courage and commitment to the test with Ductus Exemplo, Latin for "Lead by Example." These core principles aren't just taught at recruit training—they're embodied everyday by Marine leaders. On and off the battlefield, absolute trust in Corps leadership helps all Marines decisively and effectively face down the threats of our time."

The Marine Corps also hosts the event Toys For Tots annually in which they give toys to youths who aren't as fortunate. Your quote was very ignorant in my opinion you just took something from a movie without having any real idea of what they do. These men and women risk their lives and you should not under play their role in the world.

He should become a scientist, engineer or mathematician.

shjei, that's an interesting point, and those mantras are quite moving. actually, society or, even more simply, our needs and urges drive us to occupy our time. i have to support myself, so i spend a great deal of time working. i have social obligations, and i spend a great deal of my free time satisfying them. i also have urges, and spend plenty of time on them as well.

i think its easy to see that there are better occupations than others in the context of this question. a man who really applies himself to the ethical development envisioned by the marine corps should find such development, and perhaps a few beliefs. a man who spends his time on the sciences, as spacebat suggests should find the wisdom that they can convey.

but i wonder if these occupations are getting in the way of thinking about this question. although, it seems that we often learn from experiences, and *then* extrapolate to more abstract implications.

We live with uncertainty everyday, life is uncertain you can fear uncertainty or embrace it. If there's anything you can put your faith into, I think uncertainty is a great place to start.

Well, one thing is for certain: the moment you're brought to this world is one step closer to your graveyard.

Like Penny and Shaq. They thought/expected for them to win multiple championships. But Penny got injured and Shaq got traded to LA.

It was a tough loss on the Pacers today. They said they'll work harder to be a number one contender for the championship next time. Well, things don't go that way.
Players get traded, other players get better, injuries, etc.
Pacers moment onto the Finals should be now.

Turn the uncertainty to right now, I say.
