List some anime of the this decade and the last that you think shook the anime watching community.
Whether it's overall success, critical acclaim, controversy or fandom,
just as long as you could call it "impactful".

Overall Success - One Piece of heavern
It snatched Dragon Ball's weave as most successful manga of all time in Japan,
and to this day, still selling 5 times the amount its peers is selling. Truly the King.

Critical Acclaim - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
The highest rated and best reviewed anime by the GP and anime fans alike.
Truly a masterpiece worth seeing.

Critical Acclaim - Spirited Away
The only anime to win an Oscar. Enough said.

Controversy - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)
It contained the Endless Eight that was hated by both fans and non-fans.

Fandom - Code Geass
An anime with arguably one of the biggest fan base ever.
It introduced the iconic CLAMP to most people, including me.
A feat Psycho-Pass will never be able to do.

Bonus question:
What are some classic anime that fit these criteria?
Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Pokemon are definitely gonna stay influencing
future anime. That is "impact" that none of the new anime have done so far.

I think Cowboy Bebop really hit home with me. That anime really launched my love affair with the whole genre as I constantly looked for one that would be just as good.

can't stop staring at lolipop must resist urge to lick screen. as for iconic anime, I can't really say I only know what I like and dislike and don't pay much attention to what others like or find popular, like for example Gurren Laggan lots of people liked it and thought it was great but I just found it alright but I wouldn't watch it again.

Overall Success: Bakemonogatari
Critical Acclaim: Madoka Magica
Controversy: School Days
Fandom: K-On!

I think surprise successes should be noted, too. Girls und Panzer was kind of a phenomenon in Japan.

I'm still TrueGoober-sans-laptop this week, so I can't be bothered to elaborate too much (or think of other titles lol). I'd rather see how this thread plays out with other people.

I don't remember Gurren Lagann being huge.
Maybe Steins;Gate-sized huge but nothing to write home about.
(Can't really prove this since I started watching around 2009)
But it is one of the anime w/ high acclaim.

Mk, this is my serious face post.

Overall Success:

Bakemonogatari (kind of a semi-educated guess).
K-On! (KyoAni's personal money materialization device).
Sword Art Online (another semi-educated guess).

Critical Acclaim:

Ghost in the Shell (the entire franchise is a longstanding benchmark).
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (one of the strongest anime in recent memory).
Shoujo Mahou Madoka Magica (for its influence on the industry).

Controversy:

Berserk (for the extreme portrayal of graphic content).
Elfen Lied (very polarizing series).
Neon Genesis Evangelion (BAKA SHINJI).

Fandom:

Code Geass (good gateway series with a strong nostalgia factor).
Fate/Zero (this won't be a big deal in a few years).
Full Metal Alchemist (probably the biggest fanbase outside the big three).

Classics:

Akira (for worldwide success and critical acclaim).
Cowboy Bebop (the quintessential seinen).
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (for its continuing influence).

I have two for Critical Acclaim

Akira and Monster. Akira had set the steps for more future cyberpunk and sci-fi series and Monster is getting a freaking HBO series. Thats enough right there

I forgot about Monster. It's definitely respected.
It's being compared to Death Note most of the time
and each time Monster ends up winning.

But of course! No matter how much I love Light for being hilariously crazy and L for being awesomely weird Monster was serious and mature all the way through.

My sis is so desperately trying to get me to watch Monster. I want to but right now I have too much anime I'm watching at one time.

So, have you seen Monster or not? I'm kinda confused by your post.
If you haven't then I definitely recommend it!

Thanks for the recommendation. Now that's two people telling me to watch. Consider it done.
